Hwy 16 Remains Closed

Sunday, June 17, 2012 @ 2:12 PM

Prince George, BC – Highway 16 remains closed east of McBride, near the junction with Highway 5.

A mudslide closed the route to both directions of traffic, seven-kilometres west of Tete Jaune Cache and there is no detour available.

Ministry of Transportation and Highways officials had hoped crews might be able to re-open a portion of the route by 2pm – the estimate is that it will now be at least 5pm, but, once again, there’s a low confidence rating.

Motorists are advised to check www.drivebc.ca for updates.

There is a back road on the other side of the Fraser. The access is through Dunster. It comes out at Tete Jaune. Haven’t been down it for a few years. It was in good shape then.

It follows the railway track more or less, snaking along it on one side then the other. A couple of small bridges over creeks, so as long as they are not out because of the weather, it should be okay.

Should be able to do 60 to 70 km/h most of the way.
