Teachers Tentative Deal to Be Detailed to Local Membership This Afternoon

Thursday, June 28, 2012 @ 3:45 AM
Prince George, B.C.- The Prince George District Teachers Association meets at Vanier Hall this afternoon to go over the details of the tentative agreement between the BC Teachers Federation and the Provincial Government.

After the meeting, members will vote on the package, but actual results won’t be known until tomorrow evening.

Local results will not be released, only the total ballot count from all members across the province will be made public.

The agreement was reached Tuesday evening, as the clock wound down on the mediation period.

What is known about the package is that it is a two year deal which meets the provinces’ net zero mandate, and contains a memorandum of understanding that allows further discussion on a number of policy issues, including professional development and evaluation .

Prince George District Teachers Association President Matt Pearce says there are some issues which have not been discussed at all. “Our concern is around something called the split of issues, which is, which items should be negotiated at the local level, which items should be negotiated at the provincial level? That’s a concern to us, because for a long time, 17 years, a lot of issues had not been discussed at all, and that’s become very stale at the local level because the provincial employer wont allow local boards to discuss those items with teachers.”

If the Teachers  ratify the agreement, the BCPSEA will vote on the deal on Wednesday of next week.
