Prince George, BC – Nineteen people have been transported to UHNBC for treatment of minor symptoms related to a chemical reaction at the Four Seasons Pool.
Officials say fumes from a mix of muriatic acid and bleach wafted through the building around 2:30 this afternoon. Prince George Fire and Rescue responded, and have a Hazmat team on scene to neutralize the noxious mix.
Once the scene has been cleared the building will be turned back over to the City of Prince George. The pool is expected to remain closed until tomorrow.

This has happened at both facilities now.Do the staff not have to have WHMIS to be able to work in such a facility?
As far as I know WorkSafe BC has made WHMIS mandatory… but I don’t think it’s equal to a HAZMAT Team.
My point with WHMIS is the people using these chemicals etc. should be trained to know how to use them.HAZMAT is called when you fail to read the labels and the contraindications. All this is clearly marked and labelled on such chemicals
Be interesting to see how its treated, being a city owned establishment. If this happened in a private shop there would be 20 guys from WorksafeBC crawling over it.
Muriatic Acid otherwise known as Hydrochloric acid is caustic and hazardous.
However, it is used to neutralize caustic solutions to regulate PH and balance the composition of pool water.
But, mixed with bleach will cause problems. How about Chlorine Gas? This is a serious problem and has major health consequences when exposed to it.
Wow this is yet another dangerous chemical incident at a pool… those poor people that were in the Williams Lake Chlorine Leak are still dealing with the effects of that leak. I hope everyone is safe in this one! 4 months later and people are still coughing like crazy from the one in Williams Lake
Yes Ispy you’re right… and thanks for clarifying that for me.
