Special Caution Urged Around Waterways This Holiday Weekend

Saturday, June 30, 2012 @ 4:10 AM

Prince George, BC – BC residents are being urged to be vigilant in their outdoor activities, given the high water levels in waterways most areas of the province.

"Many of our lakes, rivers, and creeks are at full capacities," says Justice Minister, Shirley Bond.  "Some are spilling over and many have fast-moving waters that could impact swimming and boating.  What may be unseen to you, but equally deadly, are the strong currents, the debris under the water’s surface, and the stable shoreline eroded by high waters."

People planning on celebrating Canada Day near water are being asked to pay attention to flood bullentins and weather forecasts, and to choose an area that is safe.  Bond says, "I’m asking you to do your part – ensure your safety, the safety of your children and your pets."

In the interior of the province, where many year-round homes and recreational lakeside properties are still dealing with flood waters, boaters are being asked to avoid creating wakes that can cause additional impacts to those residents.
