Canada Celebrations Draw Large Crowd To Fort George Park

Sunday, July 1, 2012 @ 4:53 PM

The African Heritage Society Dancers were a crowd pleaser at Fort George Park

Prince George, BC – By the time dancers with the African Heritage Society wound their congo line through the crowd at Fort George Park, a number of young Canada Day revellers followed them back onto the stage – attracted by the colourful costumes and drawn in by the beat of the music.

The patriotic trio of Emma Paterson, Claire Needham, and Hannah Paterson were among the thousands who came down to the park this afternoon to enjoy all the offerings that the Multicultural and Heritage Society’s 38th Canada Day celebrations had to offer.

The bandshell has featured non-stop performances, with numerous community dance troupes, like the South Pacific Dance Group, entertaining the crowd.

Lines to the ever-popular ethnic food tents were long, but moved quickly as people were treated to a sampling from around the world.

There were also a number of local groups with information booths set up.  One of the most popular was the 396 Royal Canadian Air Cadets Squadron, where people waited in line for their turn to sit in a glider.

At right, Captain Rob Allison answers questions about the Schweizer 233, while cadets, Sergeant Parker Mobley and Sergeant Chris Evasin helped kids into and out of the glider’s cockpit.

At left, 4-year-old Colton Kroot took the position of pilot, while Linden Shelford – who turns three tomorrow – did not want to waste his time on-board by posing for a picture!

And, amid all the chaos, Joseph Herodek and Kent Chiou found a spot to settle into a game of chess.

Where are the fire works tonight?

There aren’t any. Locally anyhow.

No fireworks? Oh no! Kids will be so disappointed, been talking about it all day :/

I am sure that there will be fireworks for the 100th anniversary of the PGX ….

This is Western Canada, after all. I had to get used to that when I moved here from Ontario-ario many moons ago.

I used to enjoy the ones which were put on from the cutbanks across from Fort George Park.

Short duration,
but great location …
to celebrate the Nation!

Maybe PG can have fireworks after every last pot hole is filled. I would celebrate!

lol. Huge bump.

Driving on the outside lane of 15th ave has me worried for the passengers on the passengers side health

^ that make sense?

Nothing in this town makes sense. Look around. Driving on the inside lane near the YMCA on Massey doing the speed limit. Now that’s scary.

this town is beginning suck under shari green. Ti think I voted her. Watch now as we spiral downhill. No fireworks, cutbacks to staff and no snow removal, no potholes patching. what next to go?

One word of advice ….. work fast to find a way to start to use the Terasen “legacy” money for the 2013 budget cycle, other wise there will be nothing to use our “legacy” money for.

I think by now everyone should have figured out that the “legacy” needs to be having properly maintained infrastructure. Go to the people on that if you, Council, have to. I have this funny feeling that it will get vast support from all sides of the political spectrum.

How to spoil a Canada Day celebration, eh? Getting back to a reality check on a day like this.

Gee….if you want to be that way….
The new federal budget includes $23 million more for MP’s pensions.

On the bright side, there will be a lot of dogs that won’t miss the fireworks. Mine included. Hates thunder, fireworks and backfires.

Mine as well …. but we back onto a park and people who live around the park and in the immediate neighbourhood get together to put on a fireworks display that lasts about 10 minutes or so. Some with rocket-types that flare out into multiple colours and a rather loud bang. Then there are firecracker tyes as well. The roman candle types do not seem to be too loud.

We have two dogs. One barely looks up from his resting postion. The other pants like crazy, tail down, runs around the house trying to find a hiding place.

We had bought a “thundershirt” a year ago which was guaranteed to work, but didn’t. So the poor things goes through agony for at least 2 hours before she calms down. ven sitting beside us and touching her does not help much.

To western2
Hopefully Shari Green will be the next to go.

To all of you who thought sharey green would be a good choice for Mayor, give your head a good shake!
This is a dark time for PG.
We need a real leader. Next time get out and vote, lets not let this happen again!!!

RE: Fireworks

The fireworks for the PGX show will be fantastic. From what I have heard, 25000 dollars were utilized to purchase fireworks for that show. I was promised that it would be one of the greatest ever by a person who organizes the fireworks. We just have to wait a little bit longer…..

We need to see how Sherri stacks up against Kinsley and Rodgers. Lets not forget that Kinsley put us into this situation, and Rodgers kept us there.

I am not a big fan of Sherri, however she inherited this mess, and will have to straighten it out. She will need watching.

I agree with Gus that we had better ensure that the Teresan Gas legacy money go’s to infrastruture. Especially the millions that will be available to 2020 or whenever.

We can no longer spend huge amounts of money on BS projects, and then complain about the infrastructure.

Borrowing money, and captial projects, are what put us in the hole, so the obvious solution is to quit borrowing, and stop the capital projects. At least for 10/15 years.

Have a nice day.

Goal setting …..

The Canada Winter Games are about 2.5 years away.

I wonder about the miondset of the people who from this City who are responsible for putting thsoe games on and setting the objectives.

I think, given the times this region finds itsef in one of the major goals should be to put on the most cost effective and efficient Canada Winter games ever put on. Not quite sure ho to measure that, but there are standards in place that have to be complied with and a few new indicators of efficiency and effectiveness might have to be developed for that purpose which could be used in the future, if they do not already exist.

In the spirit of sustainable sporting events and festivities I would love to NOT see headlines such as

“MOST EXPENSIVE CANADA WINTER GAMES EVER” ….instead …

“MORE BANG FOR THE BUCK AT THE PG CANADA GAMES … CONGRATULATIONS FOR PUTTING ON SUCH A GREAT EVENT!!”

Too bad the thunder shirt didn’t work. Have been vacillating for the last year whether to buy one or not but, there are not too many favourable reviews, yours included, so decided to save my 50 plus dollars.

I feel sorry for all the terrified dogs out there and there is nothing sadder than a dog scared out of his wits, running for his life, further from the safety of his home in a panic when there is a thunderstorm. Have picked up two over the years that were running willy nilly through traffic trying to outrun the thunder. Fortunately I was able to reunite them with their owners.

Fireworks are nice but they’re expensive. Let’s save the money for the necessary infrastructure updates, especially sidewalks and our water and sewer lines. When that stuff is dealt with, we can sit back and relax to watch a great fireworks show.

Movies are expensive too. So is cable or satellite TV.

Give those up, donat the money to the City, and let’;s get tht infrastructure in shpae faster ….

Want more …. how about fast food? … all the prepared foods packaged in small plastic containers at the grocery stores…

Unbelievable how little we need those things and how mcu better our health would be without those things we aboslutely need these day ….

wanna talkabout Iphones? Tablets? ….. Our priorities are all screwed up.

We no longer do things together in large groups ….. we are connected to our own ittle worlds, these days with our own community fireworks causing noisy neighbourhoods botherng people and animals when it could be done in a more remote location where those interested in such things can gather with or without pets in small gorups or large groups.

I think one of the sayings is “everything in moderation” …… I like that saying …. It would be a good philosophy for this community to adopt ….

key words?

EVERYTHING

MODERATION

Ha Ha ! I can hear Mrs. Gus from down the road yelling “get off the computer. Use it in moderation”. Sorry bud, couldn’t resist.

No fireworks is a very good thing for my dog as well. SPCA reports that more dogs go missing due to fireworks than at any other time.
