Work on 15th Delayed

Prince George, B.C- The major repair work on 15th Avenue from West Central to Ospika Boulevard in Prince George that was supposed to get underway today will be at least a day late getting going.
The weather is not the reason for the delay, rather, the problem is the late arrival of the equipment needed to grind the existing pavement.
“The machinery was supposed to be here on the weekend” says Mick Jones of the City’s Streets Division., “but apparently the permits needed to move it here were not to be issued on a long weekend, something about having that kind of long load on the highways during a holiday weekend.”
Jones says it means the work on 15th won’t be complete this week as had been planned, but, once here, the grinder can also do the prep work for Massey, Domano and part of Winnipeg Street.
Jones says the work to repair existing cracks and potholes continues with three pothole truck crews working days and afternoons. “I think we are catching up with the really bad potholes” says Jones, the number of complaints about individual potholes has dropped.

Not issuing permits for dimensional loads in BC on long week-ends, has been standard procedure for years. Dont know why the contractor would be unaware of this.
Well maybe they are filling a lot of potholes but what we have now are “speed bumps”. They just can’t seem to get it right.

Has anyone else noticed the potholes they have marked for repair around town? How about the ones they have not marked for repair? sounds like the same old story, they won’t go out and fix a pothole unless it is complained about. What an excuse!
Ok, I keep seeing everyone complain about the roads. I will tell you that YES it is BAD in Prince George (Last time I was in PG was at the end of May) but the roads here in Winnipeg are better in some places, but in general are in worse condition. I am a truck driver so I know. I actually work out of winnipeg but live in PG….and Abbotsford.
I get to see a lot of roads, and yes, the city of PG has a lot of work to do to FIX the roads, but they are not as bad as some places. The plus side to bad roads for bad drivers is no one can tell they are a bad driver… :)
I should be back in PG within a week and I hope to see progress on the roads
My main concern is that not all holes/cracks are being fixed when they do their patching. You see a hole filled, then right next to it one is left untouched.I’m assumiing this is because at the time they were in the area the pothole was not big enough to warrant the effort. Too bad this same hole will be four times the size in a few weeks and possibly a complete blow out by next spring. So many of our roads are beyond a simple patch job or even mill and fill. These roads are in need of no less than a complete rebuild. (I know, there isn’t enoungh money) But what the city’s doing, is throwing time and materials down the drain with many of these roads. Chief Lake Road is a good example of this. The surface is almost more patch than original asphalt. One more point. Would the contractor (and city representitive) please review the specs for setting the elevation of manhole covers in relation to the new asphalt surface? Or at least rake a gradual transition when they are lower than they should be. Many of these are not only unpleasant to drive over, they are cause for possible early failure around the manhole itself. I’m not usually one to bash the city about everything they do, but this is an easy fix.

I noticed this too. Are we just bad at filling potholes, or do we not have the right equipment, or both? The bumps from the overfilled potholes aren’t much better than the original pothole was.

Another good point and a pet peeve. Why do they sometimes put manhole covers a few inches under the surface of the pavement and right where you’re going to hit them? On some streets, if you’re not dodging potholes, you’re dodging manhole covers.
They call those pits manhole covers? They have some good ones on first avenue….
I imagine the RCMP are upset too that they can’t issue speeding tickets in PG due to the pot holed roads. C’mon city hall. Fix these roads so we can speed and get a ticket if we want one. After all, city hall gets a percentage of those tickets. Times a wastin’, gal!
What do they need a grinder for?
Half of what they are grinding just peels up off the lower lift anyway.

Not quite sure how to interpret that.
1. a day = morning and afternoon?
2. a day = something else.
3. one or two crews are working mornings and afternoons
4. the remaining crew(s) is/are working afternoons only.
I suppose I should be happy just to know someone is working at some time. Right?
Now, it would be nice if someone was actually working on the route I typically take from the west end of the bowl to downtown and back. I would love to see some of my favourite and deepest potholes actually disappear. I know I will miss them …. as I continually try to do.
I’m glad they are fixing some, better than nothing I guess. What I don’t get is why fill pot holes in a section and leave some others that are right beside the ones they filled. Intersection of Simon Fraser and Cowart. They filled those a few weeks ago but left the huge one that is right at the stop sign. The only way to avoid it, is going into the lane of on coming traffic. How nice of them to leave the biggest one and the most dangerous. BONEHEADS!!!!!

There might very well be a reason why they do selective repairs, but good luck trying to get someone from the City to explain it. Where are all those highly paid communications staff?
Gus: I believe the shifts are based on a 3 shift day:
Days 8am-4pm, afternoons 4pm-midnight, nights (or some variation of the name) midnight to 8am. So my guess would be 3 crews going from 8am to midnight.
I avoid 15th altogether if at all possible it’s easier on the boogies.
