One of Aviation’s Big Boys to Land at YXS
Prince George, B.C.- One of the Jumbos of the aviation industry will be arriving in Prince George on Friday.
On Friday morning, an Antonov-124 willland at the Prince George Airport to pick up some helicopters.
The Antonov -124 is the third largest operating cargo aircraft in the world and is bound for Luanda Angola with its cargo. This aircraft can carry up to 120 tonnes of cargo weight. It will be arriving around 11:00 a.m. and is scheduled to be at YXS until Saturday morning.

I knew the expansion would pay off. Big Deal.
This is not the first Antonov-124 to land in PG. The first was in the mid-90’s and PG only had a 7400 ft. runway. We also had a visit from a C-5 Galaxy. It is something to see though. Huge!
The Citizen Newspaper says the plane will land at 1 pm.
Opinion 250 says the plane will land at 11 am.
Let’s see who is right!
There should NOT be that big of a difference in reporting the time.
lou,
the Citizen also says it will land at 11.00 am.
Direct flights to Calgary and Edmonton were tried on the past and were a dismal failure. Just ask PWA and CPAir how bad those routes were……
Wait a sec doesn’t CMA has flights to those places??
I don”t see anywhere in the article where the runway was mentioned. So who is blowing things out of proportion?
I have to agree with boomer. I definitely have not been a supporter of the runway expansion, but to use this story as a springboard to make a cheap shot at the expansion is well, cheap.
“So who is blowing things out of proportion?”
Nobody (not even Nostradamus) could have predicted the financial collapse of 2008 and the global downturn of the economy – except maybe for the banksters.
The project was approved and started during better times. Get used to the extension of the runway already! It’s done, it’s here, it’s over.
Nobody is going to go and dig it all up again, for Pete’s sake.
Arrival times very so much because cargo flights leave when they want if they are arriving empty if you really want to know when they arrive check flightaware.com
Nobody is going to go and dig it all up again, for Pete’s sake.
===========================================
But we are trying.
Cheers
Why is it spending four days here? I would think that a plane like that would be too expensive to leave idle. Presumably this is not a maintenance facility for Antonovs.
Overnight me thinks billposer :)
Ummm….Friday-Saturday……ONE day maybe Bill :)
I’d love to see that big sucker take off….but I’ve got to work :(
So people are interested in landing times, length of stay, flights to Calgary, digging up the runway ….
No one has mentioned why this thing is here – to pick up “some helicopters” bound for Angola.
Old choppers? New choppers? Chopper scrap? Donation? Sale? A local company doing some work there and bringing their helicopters? Going to the Angolan oil fields?
It is sort of like, ho hum, as if this happens every day.
http://www.news24.com/Africa/News/UN-asks-Angola-for-helicopters-20120227
“UN asks Angola for helicopters” from end of feb. 2012. Is this related?
“The arrival of the Antonov-124 will not impact regular passenger arrivals and departures.”
I wonder how they found the opportunity to land without disturbing the busy regular flight schedule at YXS … ;-)
These helicopters are under contract, this is how they are shipped, simple. Large aircraft needed for the number of helicopters in this case. These helicopter outfits have contracts all over the world in this case the only difference is shipping a number at once.
Where is this plane coming from? Will it be refueling here at the new refueling pad? I guess that is if the new on site fuel tanks have any fuel in them.
Oops. I somehow thought it was arriving today. Shouldn’t read news with inadequate blood caffeine levels.
“These helicopters are under contract” … no chit???
And this has what to do with my questions in case you felt you were responding to them. If not, then my apologies.
I did not ask about ownership. I asked about use.
This cargo plane is in the transporting of cargo business. YXS is capable of handling cargo planes (now more so than ever, with the third longest runway in Canada) – who cares what the cargo is? Helicopters, tanks, turbines, boats…it’s big and some day soon YXS will see these on daily basis. Nobody will ask questions about ownership then. It will be routine.
I’m prepared to let YXS ‘worry’ about the technical details, like do the new on site fuel tanks have fuel in them.
Considering the type of helicopters and cost of tranport it might have something to do with the UN. They have a bottomless pit.
Prince George, I think JohnnyBelt understood what I was getting at. You ,not so much. To be clear ,there is nothing in the article to suggest that the airport was hyping up the arrival of this airplane based on the new runway. My comment “”So who is blowing things out of proportion?” was meant to challenge the negative posts about the runway.
The company shipping the helicopters to Angola, Manager, Vaughn Gouws, said Vancouver was used for a staging point last time.
**We’re quite happy to be using Prince George, its our primary maintenance place, and with the runway extension, it made it possible and its good to see it being used for what is was meant for.** Direct quote from to-days citizen story.
In actual fact the plane can land and take off without using the full runway. It depends on the take off weight as to how much space they need.
So there was a little **shot** or the runway expansion.
Have a nice day.
And they are not flying to Edmonton to fill the big bird full of cheaper fuel. The flight crew just refuses to shower in flouridated water.
Boomer:”My comment “”So who is blowing things out of proportion?” was meant to challenge the negative posts about the runway.”
I understand that. What is accomplished by those negative comments? Nothing. Zero. Nada. And I agree with JB too when he states that those are cheap shots.
Middle finger, the “flouridated” water (it’s actually fluoridated water because fluoride has been added to it, not flour!) will soon be history.

Oh, PG, you were doing so well for so long. Keep on spammin’!
There is nothing negative about criticizing a $36 Million dollar project that went sideways.
We were led to beleive that there would be jobs created, etc; etc; etc; because of the expansion. Five years after completion we have diddly squat.
People seem to forget that the Airport Authority borrowed $11 million from the Northern Initiative Trust as their portion of the $36 Million for construction. None of this money has been paid back yet.
In order to borrow the money etc; the Airport Authority raised the Airport Improvement Fee to $18 . This means that this useless extension of a runway will be paid for over a long period of time by people who fly in and out of Prince George.
Where is the responsibility for those who set up this project??? How the hell can we just sit back a say, whats done is done, $36 Million down the drain, and no one to take any responsibility.
We allow the Airport Authority to use inane excuses for the lack of any planes landing, and blame it on the world economy etc. Let YXS show us specifically where they had business lined up, and then lost it because of the economy. Let them show us specifically where they are at now in regards to getting some actual planes to land, and at the same time show us how much money these plans will generate for the Airport, keeping in mind that the landing and take off fee’s are paid to NavCan not the Airport. In addition maybe they can tell us who is paying for the new storage tanks at the Airport, YXS, or a private company. If YXS, how much did it cost and is this cost also being paid for from the collection of the Airport Improvement Fees.
In my humble opinion I dont beleive there is much in the works in regards to actual growth of business at the Airport.
“Oh, PG, you were doing so well for so long. Keep on spammin’!”
I posted the link of a very informative and educational website, which is nonprofit and volunteer. By definition this is not spam. Therefore it is allowed on this site because (if you would dare visit it to find out and learn something new) it expresses an opinion based on verifiable facts.
If you are a dentist or if have any other monetary interest in promoting the addition of a harmful substance to drinking water you can avail yourself of the opportunity to post an opinionhere which differs from the one I have expressed before.
I would be pleased to read it and I (for one) would not unfairly and childishly label it as spam.
My opinion is that this community can do better than pollute our otherwise pristine drinking water with a chemical effluent pollutant. The emperor has no clothes!
Prince George.
The only thing that I can suggest you do, is sue the City for contaminating the water and causing you distress. On the other hand if you dont drink the water, then I suppose you cant do that. Maybe you could get those people who are drinking the water, and have been for the past 40 years more or less, to sue. On the othe hand, if they are still alive and healthy then how would they convince the Judge that they have a case.
Hmmmmm. We have a conundrum. Those who dont drink the water are unhappy, and those who do drink the water are not complaining.
Great comment, Palopu! It’s not only a health issue but also an issue of civil rights. People were told for many decades that smoking is a harmless habit. Now we all know differently. The city has permission from the government to keep adding this ‘medication’ to everybody’s drinking and bathing water. The government takes no responsibility for any harmful side effects. The whole entire responsibility falls on the shoulders of those who make the decision to medicate the water – in this case it is local the mayor and the council.
Drinking the medicated water can be avoided, but bathing with it can not. The city will not pay for a whole house fluoride removal filtration system for those who insist to have wholesome unmedicated water. People are also advised not to prepare infant formula with fluoridated tap water! Why? Because the stuff is harmless? Over 20% of Canadian teenagers have some teeth damaged by fluorosis. If it damages your teeth, what does it do to your insides?
There is no need for any lawsuits! The stuff is bad, it shouldn’t be in the water, the province is already 98% fluoride addition free and why should the remaining 2% (Terrace, Ft. St. John and P.G.) not be allowed to have artificial fluoridation FREE tap water, same as the vast majority?
The stuff is bad because it is a contaminated scrubber effluent (cadmium, lead, mercury and arsenic) mutagen and it can cause bone cancer in young boys and affect thyroids, kidneys and the pineal gland. If the city were to use a pharmaceutical grade fluoride the cost of fluoridation could increase ten fold to over a million and a half dollars annually.
Civil rights are about freedom of choice and freedom from discrimination.
Fluoridation eliminates any freedom of choice and it is discriminatory.
It’s Un-Canadian.
Palopu :
Bang on man. It must have been a day like today when Jim Blake was convinced to pursue this project. Around noon today there were 3 jets passing over us. To me, that would mean the jet-stream is over us. Jim was probably told that its because we are on a super efficient circum polar navigational route. Approach your buds, Pat and Dick, because they both have pre-election money to spend. So far all the community has gotten is higher fees to pay for increased air field maintenance costs. Also, as you mentioned, the NITF has not received any payments on the loan yet.
Middle finger. I seen the three jets flying over and tried to signal them with semaphore that they should land here for fuel, however they carried on unabated, by my histrionics
LOL…that’s hilarious. I’m sure I just read somewhere that two pull’s with the flag’s over the left shoulder meant you must land at YeXe$ !
