Antonov 124 Departure Delayed

Saturday, July 14, 2012 @ 10:53 AM

Prince George, B.C.-  Aviation enthusiasts hoping to watch the Antonov 124  take off from the Prince George Airport had better be  packing lots of sun screen.

Originally the flight was set to leave YXS at 10:30 this morning,  then that was pushed  to 11:00 a.m. and now Lindsay Cotter, with Prince George Airport Communications, says she has been told the new take-off time is set for 1:30 this afternoon.

The departure was abruptly called off this morning after official word was sent to the Prince George airport that civil strife has broken out in Angola, and the government there has banned aircraft from entering Angolan air space.  The situation in Angola is said to be unstable, and it is not known when or if the crew of the Antonov here will get clearance to fly into that country.

All that we know right now is the big transport plane will remain here until 1:30 and then will fly directly to Gander, Newfoundland.  The Antonov was originally scheduled to fly to Edmonton for re-fuelling, but Cotter says it fuelled up here instead.

The  huge cargo plane arrived in Prince George yesterday  to pick up  7 helicopters  for delivery in Angola.  The choppers will be used to  transport election officials and equipment  to  villages and towns for the upcoming election.

hahhahahaha only in PG would an airplane landing make the news. Who actually takes time out of their day to go watch a plane lane. can u say hillbilly. No wonder pg has such a bad name hahaha

I think it is wonderful that people can catch a glimpse of a plane they would not see otherwise.

Obama, interesting handle, so what are your interests?

If people enjoying something out of the ordinary that is both free and a learning experience makes them a hillbilly, count me in.

Is Peter MacKay in Angola now ?

As I said before, this can’t be the same Obama that went to Columbia and Harvard.

its not Obama, its “zero”bama which explains allot, a real zero.

The longer runway is too short.

It will be fine. Gander’s main runway is 10,200 ft. Probably constructed with concrete to boot.

“The longer runway is too short.”

I wrote that tongue-in-cheek! Whooooosh!

Actually this plane needs at least 3500 metres when it takes off fully loaded. Ie; 120 Tons. 240,000lbs or 108864 kgs.

This particular load that they are picking up weighs only approx 20,000 kgs or 44092 lbs. Each helicopter weight approx 6500lbs empty.

They may need all the space (more or less) for these seven helicopters inside the plane, however from a weight point of view this is nothing for this aircraft. I suspect it can get off the ground with have the runway available.

Have a nice day.

Haha…..Whooooosh.

I recognized your attempt at humour Prince George. Did you understand my return ? Gander is a little town of about 11,000 people with a massive airfield. Of course, the Gander airport was built with a purpose in mind.
YeXe$ was expanded to “see if they will come”.

Aviation enthusiasts and other people interested in planes would come out to see it. It’s called a hobby and those people are lucky to get to see something that interests them.

Hardly makes you a hillbilly for doing so. Just means they have something better to do with their Saturday than troll a local news website and call people hillbillies. That’s the only thing that is sad around here.

Gander was at one time very busy before more modern aircraft and their longer range. They used to fuel up there before or after crossing the Atlantic. Not near as busy now but still gets traffic needing fuel.

When the Condor landed here before the runway extension, landing even with a heavy load takes a shorter distance than takeoff. It could not have taken off here with the heavy load it brought in at that time. Also density altitude of the airport comes into play. The higher the airport and higher the temperatures the longer takeoff run is extended.

BCracer the extension was planned and put into play before the economy tanked and air freight dropped dramatically, as mentioned many times here which you seem to ignore. Air cargo is recovering but slowly, they will come especially when cargo can be loaded and offloaded. Did you foresee the economy going into the toilet?

The one thing that is a bar against all learning, and will keep you in everlasting ignorance, is contempt prior to investigation.

Those who actually saw the aircraft come and go can now say they seen it in action.

Those who didnt, cant. Never pass up an opportunity to gain a little knowledge. Every little bit helps.

Herbert Spencer had some other great quotes….. such as:

Government is essentially immoral.

No one can be perfectly free till all are free; no one can be perfectly moral till all are moral; no one can be perfectly happy till all are happy.

In science the important thing is to modify and change one’s ideas as science advances.

The great aim of education is not knowledge, but action.

Music must take rank as the highest of the fine arts – as the one which, more than any other, ministers to the human spirit.

The fuel bill must be massive for that tank with wings.
