Environment Canada had issued an extreme thunderstorm watch for the region. And it was borne out by the weather that
surrounded the Birch Bay Resort at Francois Lake. Debbie LaBarbera was there celebrating her birthday. She grabbed her camera to take the pictures you see here. She tells us the storm was unbelievable as golf ball-sized hailstones thumped awnings, smashed vents on trailers and left dimples in several vehicles.

Apparently the storm resembled something you would expect to see during the hot months of summer in Ontario.

There certainly are some incredible thunder storms out here in the Ottawa Valley. There were a couple of smaller tornados earlier in the year and I’ve seen a number of storms where I was awestruck by what was happening in the sky around me (I love storms and will just sit and watch them).
Recently though, it’s just been hot with no thunder, no lightning and no rain. We’re actually in a drought right now. There was a brush fire in one of the trail areas I frequent and it’s been burning for a few days now. With no rain and overnight lows in the low 20’s, the fire just keep smouldering. Earlier in the year I took my son into that spot to feed ducks and there was a huge pond about 2-3 feet deep. Now it’s bone dry and the bed is cracked like something you’d expect to see in Death Valley. Some rain would sure be nice!
That thing doesn’t look ‘golf ball size’ to me, mind you they are big enough to do damage!
We had a storm like this in Salmon Arm in ’94 that broke windshields and side mirrors and put hundreds of ping pong sized dents in both our vehicles, and so many tree branches came down they brought out the street sweepers to clean the roads. Major insurance $$ went out after that storm…
