Air Quality Advisory Issued for Prince George

Monday, July 16, 2012 @ 9:36 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Another  air quality advisory has been issued for Prince George.

Ministry of the Environment Meteorologist Dennis Fudge says this time, the  wildfire smoke is coming from forest fires in the northeast of B.C. and Northwest of Alberta "You can see from the satellite shots a haze coming down over the Rockies  through a trench and into this region.  I have also issued an Air quality advisory for Fort St. John as the smoke is pretty heavy through the Peace Region as well."

Last week,  smoke from wildfires in Siberia and Asia were to blame for the  haze over Prince George.

The provincial air quality objective for fine particles, PM2.5, is 25 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM2.5 rolling average was 28 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown site, 23 µg/m3 at College Heights, 27 µg/m3 at Exploration Place and 27 µg/m3 at foreman Flats at 9 am today.

The provincial air quality objective for coarse particles, PM10, is 50 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM10 rolling average was 34 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown, 30 µg/m3 at College Heights and 38 µg/m3 at BCR at 9 am today.

Based on the air quality data, the high particulate levels are mainly due to smoke from forest fires located in northwestern Alberta.

An upper flow is expected to become westerly by tomorrow morning pushing the smoke eastward.

This Air Quality Advisory is expected to be in effect at least until tomorrow, with an update to be provided at 4:00 pm this afternoon.

Doh! As if we didn’t put enough of our own crap in the air, now we’re importing it.

There was a fair sized brush fire in a greenbelt area I use out here in Ottawa last week and it was the first time since I moved here last Spring that I actually thought “huh, I can feel that I bit when I run”.

When I reminisce about PG there are many things I miss and others not so much :)

Do you miss the 5 to 10 minute commute??? :-)

Or how about the 70kph “speeding” on the bypass versus 120 to 130 kph “speeding” on the Queesnway? ;-)

Commute is definitely a bit longer, about 30-40 minutes total compared to the 15 minutes I had in PG. I take the bus in so that time includes driving to the park and ride from my house but it is also virtually stress free as I just throw on my iPod and don’t worry about a thing. Driving in can be 20 minutes or an hour and a half depending on how you hit the traffic. Given the risks, I don’t mind the bus, LOL.

I laughed when I first moved out here. There are parts of Kanata that have an 80 kph speed limit and that would be on a road like Foothills near Tabor. It sure felt fast compared to what I was used to. Strangely enough, there are days where 120-130 on the Queensway feels leisurely, LOL.

On one of these horrendous smoke choked days I think I will just get myself a lawn chair and a nice cold drink and sit in the middle of one of our “celebrated” no-idling zones. One way to escape the air pollution.
