New Scrap Metal Buying Rules Come Into Effect Tomorrow

Sunday, July 22, 2012 @ 4:28 AM

Prince George, B.C.-  As of tomorrow, the new provincial laws aimed at curbing metal theft in B.C. will take effect.

Effective tomorrow, those wishing to sell certain metals have to produce valid identification and the scrap dealers and recyclers who buy the metals will be required to keep records and share those purchase details with police.

The new rules mean police can use the information to compare with reports of stolen metal. If need be, investigators can seek court orders to get more information from dealers.

Metal theft has increased in frequency over the past couple of years as the price of metals such as copper, climbed significantly. There have been numerous cases of phone lines being cut and stripped for their copper content. These thefts have disrupted phone and electrical service to the public and caused millions of dollars in losses for utility companies such as Telus and B.C. Hydro.

The new regulations focus on items which have been targeted by thieves, such as copper telephone wire and plumbing, to manhole covers and metal grave markers.

Buyers of metals who fail to register with the Province and meet the record keeping requirements could be fined up to $100 thousand dollars.

Oh my God, you are kidding me right? All these wonderful well intentioned folks stealing copper from Telus and Hydro and everyone else attempting to transport it have been able to sell the proceeds from their activities and gone undetected for all these years because of the buyers and the sellers haven’t had to prove identity or justify the source of their bounty.

Finally, just now you have come up with a system?
