Prince George, B.C.- City Councillor Garth Frizzell has received unanimous support for his motion to lead a fundraising and organizing campaign for the upcoming meting of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
The meeting is set for March 6-9th of 2013 and will see at least 140 and possibly as many as 160 delegates coming to the City for their annual meeting.
Frizzell will be leading the efforts to raise $20 thousand dollars to support the event which is expected to have a positive economic impact of nearly $500 thousand dollars.
Councillor Frank Everitt says this meeting is an excellent opportunity to showcase the City of Prince George. That sentiment was echoed by Councillor Murry Krause.

A couple of questions. What’s the $20,000 for? Second question is how do you get $500,000 in economic benefits? That’s a 25 times multiplier. Using the 160 peolpe attending, that works out to $3,125 per person. The most expensive hotel I could find is $174 per night ($199 with tax) time 3 nights is $522 / 597 or less if they get a corporate or group rate. That leaves $2,528 or roughly $800 a day. I am assuming that lunch will be provided as will at least one dinner. I don’t count leasing the venue as that would be the city paying the city. To me, the numbers don’t add up.
well if they spend like our city hall….it will be way more than than.
Come on let’s not it pick on very single thing that come out of City Hall.Garth Frizzell will do a good job. He’s very ethical and passionate about the needs of PG.
Well it sort of like we are going to do $75,000,000 worth of business in 10 days that the winter games will be here.
Ummm can someone explaine how they came up with this. Thanks.
What is the city going to be a showcase for?
We can also “showcase” our famous pot holes. Cool, eh?
Agreed that Garth Frizzell is a man of character and will do what he thinks best for the City and this is demonstrated by his goal to raise the funds needed, privately, which is the caveat for my support. If this was, or will be the case, that the funds needed comes from the same coffers that other worthy organizations have been denied from – organizations with a much broader mandate, appeal and benefit to the City other than the opportunity for our Councillors to wine and dine with other Councillors – then I would cry foul at the top of my lungs. Cut backs are for everyone.
Except for maybe Enbridge, what private entity would put up money for a meeting of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities ?
If there is going to be a meeting of The Federation Of Canadian Municipalities there should be a motion that Enbridge money is NOT USED in this venture.
Our Federal government supports Enbridge,
even so, I second Surefire’s motion that Enbrodge money not be used in this venture. It is just a matter of time before Enbridge finds a willing and major sponsor in PG….I place my bets that it will be the Canada Winter Games….PG City Council would not object since they have chosen to remain mute on the Enbridge pipeline project….unlike other municipal leaders in Northern BC.
