Phase 2 of Duchess Park Plan Underway

Tuesday, July 31, 2012 @ 9:20 AM
The Duchess Park Plan

Prince George, B.C.- Work begins this week on the second phase of the development of Duchess Park.

This phase will include the development of an accessible playground and mini bike park on the  Crescents neighbourhood property.

The costs for this phase are being covered by three sources of funding:
  • $246 thousand from the City’s capital plan
  • $400 thousand from a Provincial Community recreation grant and
  • $46 thousand from private donations.
The City of Prince George’s Manager of Parks and Solid Waste, Flavio Viola says  he expects the construction to be completed by the end of October.

The park has already had a fenced dog park, and trail system built.   Other components yet to be built include tennis courts, an amphitheatre, all weather sports field and heritage components.

93.35% from the taxpayer. For one more park the city’s not going to maintain?

And we need another dog park. The Ginter area and Moores Meadow are not big enough for the dogs to crap in. If you want a dog walk it on the street like the rest of us and clean up after your pet.
Cheers

The City has cut funding to the perks that we have so why are they building new ones?
Cheers

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha……City’s capital plan….ha ha ha ha ha ….like they have a plan…..ROTFFL….

Another bike park a few blocks away from Massey place. There are other areas of town! I remember the story of the kids on the hart building a ramp beside the highway and the city putting up cement blocks to stop them.
And if you want to go WAY back, those of us out west are still patiently waiting for our swimming pool.

Some of those areas ,would make quite convenient LZ’s for medi-vac choppers.
Only 3-4 blocks from ambulance station and hospital.
In times of emergency.

Lots of room down there. They should put up shelters for the homeless to sleep under.

My thoughts exactly Whatthe.. look at the other existing parks right now.. deplorable and now they decided we need another eye sore.. fantastic.

lonesome.. thanks for the laugh. :). our city has a capital plan and it plans on spending capital we dont have.. plan is complete.. almost time for another raise for mayor and council isnt it ???

I look forward to the new editions to the park. Hope to enjoy my lunches there once the grass and benches come in.

A park and all weather sports field for the crescents and Duchess Park ? I can live with that. But what is with this New York City attitude that we have to build little fenced in pens for bicycles and dog pooping ?

How about a treatment center for drug addicts?

I think its a great idea for a great spot in the middle of town. Not sure about how well received the bike park will be, all in all its a positive thing for PG!

Hey middle finger, please define New York City attitude?

New York attitude?

From the song Franky made famous:

“If I can make it there; You know, I’m gonna make it just about anywhere”

Problem is, it does not work quite that well with Prince George ….. LOL

Opinionated:
We live in the boonies, plenty of trails and parkland for your dog and kids to play and poop on. Building little fenced in areas seems like something for the inner city of a major metropols. Not the boonies.

Metropolis, you know what I meant.

They can’t maintain what they have so what is the point?

Maybe the next thing on councils agenda is to send out adopt a park workorders telling you it’s your turn to mow the lawn this week.

The only fence is the one surrounding the off leash dog park – and that is pretty much a necessity.

Everyone has different needs. The notion that one size fits all is totally erroneous.

From our house we can step off our property and into a City Park. Moore’s Meadow, Moran, Freimueller, the green right of way of Foothills and so on which will actually link with minimal use of paved sidewalks to Fish Trap Island and the waters of the Nechako. It is a paradise of sorts in a small community set in the north central wilderness of BC.

So why would one hop in a car and go anywhere else? Because Hudson’s Bay Slough Park is unique with its trails and views of the slough and its ducks; as is Cottonwood Island, Gunn Park with its view of the city, and Fort George Park Heritage Trail portion and Paddlewheel with their views of the Fraser and cutbanks, especially at sunset. I am missing a whole bunch because we have so many, without even getting into the number of places that are further out and more remote.

There are City parks that allow unleashed dogs, leashed dogs, and no dogs allowed. Since the City’s bylaws enforcement is hit and miss, with the emphasis on miss, one is guaranteed nothing. As a small dog owner, walking with a dog legally on a leash, the chief concern is encountering someone with a large dog that is unleashed and totally out of control. The small dog, leashed or not, can quickly become toast.

THAT is THE reason for fenced dog parks – allows dogs off leash in a controlled environment since there is typically a part for small dogs and another for large dogs.

Those parks are actually not only a socializing place for dogs, but also a social place for people. While people are unlikely to socialize much with others in larger parks, they very much do so in fenced dog parks.

The dog park actually has been at Duchess Park since last fall.

Rent a dog, and visit us …… ;-)

Oh, right, poop! The saying is “reduce pollution by dilution” …. Essentially that is the system used by people who walk their dogs along sidewalks and allow them to do what they need to in adjacent front yards.

On the other hand, fenced dog parks tend to have very little poop since it is readily visible, there are bags and there are garbage containers and, most of all, there is social pressure with others being there. It is likely the only place where one will find people picking up after dogs that are not theirs.

The only trick is training the dog to tell the master, “hey, you forgot to pick up my poop!

Now another problem with poop is the multi use trail heading up to the university! Horse people pick up your doggies poop! The city should put shovels and glad garbage bags at the trail head so these folks can do the proper thing. You clean out their pen don’t you? Well clean up the trails too!

Went past the Duchess Park dog park a couple of times last week.

No dogs, no people.

Go in the evenings after supper when people are home after work and the days are cooler ….. or first thing in the morning I am told as well…..

What you found is common for general park use as well as people walking dogs around the neighbourhood ….. busiest times are evenings hands down.

Not everyone is retired …. ;-)

Palopu, grab yourself a pooch and come on down to Duchess some night after supper. You may even shed a smile or two to see the 4 legged and two legged enjoying this park.
Heck, even come out without a dog and maybe you will run into a pal or two.
There was a lady there last night from Mackenzie who stopped because she had heard about this park and wishes her town will follow and develope one too.

Logical One that is very logical to build a helicopter pad with pilot activated lights for the hospital. The area is wide open, lots of viability, no near by structures. The pad would take very little from the park. Since that is very logical it will never be done, not by this daft city administration.

I carry bear spray as I do a lot of hiking off urban trail hiking. The only time I have used it is on a dog on a city trail. Best way to protect yourself and your dog. Person threatened to call the cops, I said no leash, no tag and I was charged by the dog, here use my phone. Didn’t take up my offer.

Oh, the most bears I have seen have been in town minding their own business along with a cougar off the end of Southridge a few years back.

I believe there used to be a helipad on the PGRH site some time ago.

A helipad which requires a patient to be transferred to another vehicle in order to reach the ER is not the ideal.

If one wants to build a helipad that even begins to make sense, use the end destination as the centre of a circle and look for appropriate sites within the smallest radius. There are several other potential on the ground sites that far closer, including the 9 space parking on the hospital site at the north east corner adjacent to the ER (but one level lower. Then there are locations on the Northern Health building/ambulance station site as well as adjacent to St. Giles and 15th.

We don’t have air ambulance helicopters so no need for a helipad.

This appears to be the helipads for hospitals and other emergency operators in BC which are listed by Transport Canada.

Interesting that there does not seem to be anything south of Kamloops in the south central region.

NoWay if you haven’t noticed non airambulance helicopters are used quite often to transport injured. Duchess would be a good site for the big Cormorant of the airforce.

Funny thing about helicopters, you can land them where they fit! If one had to land here the cops could shut 15th ave so they could land right beside the hospital. No need for a heliport at all.

I thought the entrance to the emergency entrance at the hospital was a helipad? Wasn’t that the purpose behind its redesign a number of years ago?
