Chilliwack, B.C.- The Prince George Lomak Knights peewee AA baseball team lost a very close game to open the B.C. Minor Baseball Association provincials in Chilliwack.
The Knights scored four times in the bottom of the first inning, but were held quiet from there in a 6-4 loss to Rutland. The Knights had the bases loaded when the final out was made.
Devin Sutton and Cole Schwing had doubles in the first inning, but seven strikeouts over the next six innings helped stall the offence. Rutland chipped away, scoring once in the second inning, three times in the fourth, and once each in the fifth and sixth innings to turn things around.
Starting pitcher Cole Schwing pitched into the fourth inning before being relieved by Dustin Aldana, who took the loss. Cole Beacom closed the game by striking out four of the five batters he faced. Michael Taylor doubled in the fifth inning and a threat was building, but he was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple.
Devin Sutton was named the player-of-the-game for Prince George.
The Knights play twice on Friday – 9 a.m. against Ladner, and 3 p.m. against Nanaimo. Jarin Sutton will be the starting pitcher for the Knights against Ladner. The opening ceremonies and skills competition take place Thursday night.
Other members of the team are Jeremy Gervais, Scott Walters, Nigel Thompson, Michael Schwab, Zach Swanson and Jordan Arnett.
