Bell Happy with Latest Job Numbers

Friday, August 10, 2012 @ 9:19 AM
Prince George, B.C.- The Minister of Jobs Tourism and Innovation is thrilled with the latest job numbers for Prince George. The unemployment rate is 6.6%, down from the 6.8 recorded in June and unchanged from July of last year.

Pat Bell says the 50,600 jobs in the City is a new record and is reflective of the growth in the resource sector “Look at where the gains were, forestry, mining and oil and gas sectors.” There were 600 new jobs last month over June  and up 1,000 over the month of July in 2011.

He says he is concerned by the job losses recorded in the accommodation and hospitality sector in the region, and says that would appear to be part of the overall losses recorded among part time workers.

He also notes July saw a loss of 1,000 jobs in the education sector, however he expects that will recover  September when teachers are back on the job.

In B.C., 14,500 jobs were lost, reflecting a national trend, as 30,400 jobs were lost across Canada. However, full-time positions in B.C. increased by 9,600 from June 2012, and the decrease in total employment was entirely due to the loss of part-time employment. B.C.’s 7.0 per cent unemployment rate remains below the national average (7.3 per cent) and, with 33,400 job gains since July 2011, B.C. ranks third nationally, after Ontario (+47,200) and Alberta (+45,700).

50,600 jobs in the City??? Where do these numbers come from???

The City population (Federal Census 2011 71,974) Provincial count 75,828.

Children age 0-14 12,940, Seniors over 65, 8385, Total 21,325.

We can assume that most seniors and all children are not working. So this leave us a total of (using BC Stats number 75,828) 54,503 people available to work.

Are we to beleive that there are only 3903 people unemployed in the City of Prince George?? This number would include all people between the age of 14 and 65. There would be more people on social assistance, or stay at home parents, or the actual unemployed.

So where do we get these numbers from??? Perhaps we are in fact talking about the Regional District which would include MacKenzie, Valemount, etc; Even then its a bit of a stetch.

I guess we know what happens to all that BC bud the cops take in!!!

Well, many people have more than one job of course…..

How do they measure all the ‘under the table’ jobs?? I’m sure there are a few around this area.

I’m just thrilled to pieces that Bell is thrilled.

One thing you can say about Pat Bell is that he is a high profile MLA, who are our MPs here anyway?

One thing you can be sure of. Bell never lets the facts get in the way of a good press release.

Food bank usage in BC is way up?

BC lost nearly 15000 jobs in July and the Liberals are happy!?

and the whole of Canada lost 30,000. Yup that would make me happy too if I was a Liberal.
