Great Time For A Shower

Saturday, August 11, 2012 @ 4:27 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Many inhabitants of planet Earth are taking a time out to enjoy the annual Perseid meteor shower blazing across the sky.

And the Prince George Royal Astronomical Society’s observatory off Tedford Road near West Lake is open to those wishing to get a close up look at the show. The observatory opens at 7:30pm, but society President Blair Stunder suggests people show up around 8:30 because it will be getting dark by then.  He also says it’s a good idea to bring along comfortable chairs that recline for a better view.

August 10th to 13th is prime time for the Perseid meteor shower this year. Meteors are typically best after midnight, but in 2012, with the moon rising into the predawn sky, you might want to watch for   meteors in late evening too.   Many of the experts say the Perseids are the year’s best shower, with 50 to 60 meteors per hour in a dark sky.  These meteors are often bright and frequently leave persistent trains.  The Perseid meteors will streak across these short summer nights from late night until dawn, with only a little interference from the waning crescent moon.

The Environment Canada forecast has Saturday night into Sunday as being the clearest period of the weekend, so you may want to adjust your meteor viewing period accordingly.
