Prince George, B.C.- A 42 year old Prince George man has died in an ATV incident behind the Hart Wheel Inn.

Around 2 this afternoon, the man was riding his quad, with his 7 year old daughter on board. The ATV flipped backwards on a steep incline, the man died in the crash. The daughter, who was visiting form out of town, was not injured.

The girl stayed with her father until some other recreational motorcyclists arrived on the scene and they called 9-1-1.

The RCMP are assisting the coroner with the investigation and have indicated they will not comment further on this incident until after 8:00 Monday morning.

The man’s name will not be released until next of kin have been notified.

So sad. Condolances to the family.

It is too bad these sort of incidents have to happen. This was not an accident. This seems to have been a very classic, avoidable incident.

Rest in peace.

everything is avoidable if you just don’t do anything gus…this was an accident of the worst kind, not only was this person carefull, but even more so with his daughter on the quad…the reporter was slightly skewed on the accuracy of the hill in question

My heart breaks for this little girl, condolences to family..

7 hours after he’s dead and the ever superior Gus has to let us know that he knows everything. Gus, why don’t you do one of your famous (and tedious, I might add) web searches and cut and paste various definitions, philosophies, history, and other related research into the word “classless”.

Hey gus, unless u know him shut the hell up…….
He was a good neighbour toy mom, harx worker great dad who would NOT risk hurting his daughter!!!!
There is no way to know exactly what happened bit i guarantee it was a accident, he had probs with atv, hes not a reckless driver, he was my moms neighbour for 4 yrs.

“The ATV flipped backwards on a steep incline, the man died in the crash”

I happen to be involved with safety in the forest industry. The two most common workplace activities which cause death as well as serious injuries are driving on forestry roads and ATV incidents. I do not have to look that up anywhere.

Unless the ATV is specially built for two people, which are very few, there would be a sticker on every new ATV which warns against carrying a passenger. In a workplace situation a 5% slope is excessive enough to require written procedures for handling the ATV. A typical manufacturer’s handbook uses a 25% slope as the limit for use. For those who do not know what that is, it is a 1 foot rise for 4 foot run, visually a fairly gradual and safe looking slope.

ATVs are rider active vehicles. The positioning of the rider is important with respect to the movement of the centre of gravity which can easily be relocated to move outside the stability quadrangle as located by the wheels. Having a person in the back influences the C of G and moves it to the rear. Angling the vehicle up an incline moves the static resultant further to the rear of the stability quadrangle. Placing a log or rock or ridge in the path increases the average incline as the ATV rolls across the obstruction.

Add a dynamic reaction such as a momentary acceleration to allow the ATV to move up the incline a bit faster or roll over an obstruction puts the resultant C of G force vector even further to the rear.

In this case, by the simple knowledge that the machine flipped backwards, that is what happened. Simple fact of physics ….. sorry, but I am not Newton, so I am just passing the info on.

If someone wants to learn from it, that is great. For those who are not interested, it is a free world ……

Sites such as this can be used for more than just reporting incidents for the gawking public. It can raise awareness to others who paticipate in similar activities so that those who get injured and even die from such incidents will allow others to learn and reduce such incidents.

Consider it in the same fashion as those woho donate organs to the living. In this case the event and its prevention are donated to those of us who remain for the time being and may prolong someone’s life even longer.

Think outside your comfort zone sometime. It can be an eye opening experience.

Those are some of the steepest hills in PG area… I seen guys flip over backward on dirt bikes on those hills. What a huge tragedy. I couldn’t imagine how horrendous this is for the little girl involved. Pure accident IMO….

Gus there is a time and a place… what you are insinuating has no place in this debate at this time in a public setting. Smart as you may be you show no class in this case. The little girl I’m sure can read and has to live with out her father now.

So sad!!! A 42 year young man has died, and his daughter has witnessed it. The poor girl will have nightmares for years. Counselling is definitely needed. Sympathy is extended to all family and friends on this terrible day.
At this point it doesn’t matter how or why…………..

Well said Lenny.

A young life ended all too soon in an accident. My condolences to the family.

Gus ok im sorry about snapping at you about shutting up. I get what ur saying now ….it was how u wrote it was like personal a atta,k on him. No one really knows what happenes n i really dont think he would take his daughter on a slope that was too risky
I talked to his gfs dad, tge facts arent all out there but the main fact is this girl lost her father.

I think the anger directed at gus is misplaced. It does appear to be a terrible accident which was completely avoidable. And now this litle girl has this memory to deal with for the rest of her life. A terrible tragedy.

“Gus there is a time and a place”

And this forum has a three day window, with the number of people “looking in” dropping off by the end of the second day.

I guarantee you if I were to post this on Friday free for all, I would get the same reaction.

While it is fresh in people’s mind, there are important lessons to be learned. Yes, some are close to the family and they need to grieve and they will do so. For the others, there are lessons to be learned one more time.

I am not blaming anyone on the machine. The same as cars, I blame those people who know, understand, and are in a position to do something about it – manufacturers, dealers, ICBC and other provincial agencies. The machins are fun, they are a gret work tool, but they are also dangerous and it is very sad to see another person had to die and others will continue to die or get life altering injuries until something changes.

Lisambc … I understand your reaction. You were close to the individual. Your reaction is perfectly natural.

I was not expecting cyber hugs for my point of view.

What is going to change Gus? Make all the regulations and safety videos you like. People will always break the rules and take chances. Look at all the rules, regulations and placards we have now and people choose to ignore them. Just drive around town and you will see people standing on the edge of manlift baskets, people standing on the top rung of a ladder, people with no fall restraint when they should have, people on electronic devices while driving, people speeding, people without bike helmets, people not wearing their seat belts. The list goes on and on! Some people do these things over and over without any consequences while others make a bad judgement call once and pay the ultimate price for it.

Unfortunately people have “it’s not going to happen to me” attitude and will continue to get hurt/killed in these type of incidents no matter how many regulations you make.

A local inventor (Mark Shaw) has a patented device that greatly reduces the chance of ATV rear roll-overs.

It works extremely well.

I am actually not close to him gus, but he n my step dad chatted ,the lil crescant kinda watches out for each other. Mom has been neighboura with him about 4 yrs. My reaction came from being a mommy son is 9.
No way……ur right, people have the tude it wont happen tp me….my so. When at,moms says do i have to wear my bike helmet?? I say dam straight!!!!!! No seat belt no driving ,hes good about that. I admitt i was bad about text n drive. …..i was like cant do this not about the fine but my /our safety.

NoWay wrote: “What is going to change Gus?”

I answer that with “look at what HAS changed”.

Look at car travel deaths and major injuries; look at industrial deaths and major injuries. I know that those have come down greatly over the last several decades, especially when looking at rates per person and even more at rates per units of production and rates per units of travel distance.

I am not sure about recreational deaths and injuries.

Those changes did not come about by themselves. They came about through improved process design, improved tool design, improved standards, and improved awareness of people involved.

Can we keep on improving? There comes a point of diminishing returns. It is becoming more difficult in some areas that are already quite far advanced. But there are other areas where improvement has not happened to the extent that it could.

ATVs and the new UTVs happen to be one of those areas, in my opinion.

There are several rollover preventio deviced. I think the one you have linked to is a good one, rocky.

This on from New Zealand is also good and adds some side rollover protection as well.

Agreed gus but in the end you still have the human factor. Can you improve on the human factor? Sure some will heed the warnings and take the advice others won’t. I remember a saying my mom once told me…. “There are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there aren’t any old bold pilots.”
