Burns Lake, B.C.- Just a month to go before the Cops for Cancer “Tour de North” bike tour hits the road.
Two of the participants from the Burns Lake RCMP detachment have collected more than $16 thousand dollars towards the cause.
Last week, Constable Karla Ivany and Corporal Chris Ivany, who will be among the officers taking part in the Tour de North, held a Cops for Cancer Jail n’ Bail fundraising event in Burns Lake.
Participants of the Jail n’ Bail event, agreed to be thrown into a mock jail to raise bail for their release. Mock arrest warrants were issued for offences such as, not being a Canucks fan, impersonating a flooring specialist, too much fishing, speeding on the golf course, bad hair cuts, and leaving food in the fridge for too long.
In total, 24 Burns Lake community members were jailed. A barbecue and garage sale were also held at the event. The event was a success and raised $16,300. The dollars raised will go towards funding the best pediatric research and lifesaving clinical trials in Canada.
Researchers are working to improve the detection and diagnosis of cancer and to find more effective, safer treatments. Money donated is also used for the operation of Camp Goodtimes, which is a summer recreation program that provides a safety-minded, medically supervised and fun week of activities for children and their families at no cost.
The Tour starts in Prince George on Sept. 14th and will see participants bike more than 800 kms from Prince George to Prince Rupert.
