Regional District On the Road to Clearing Litter

Friday, August 17, 2012 @ 3:59 AM
Prince George, B.C.- The main road to the Foothills Landfill,  has been plagued with litter from vehicles heading to the landfill.

On any given day, the stretch of Foothills Boulevard from North Nechako road to the entrance to the landfill, can be strewn with a variety of debris. Sometimes its bits of drywall, an old couch, maybe a mattress or boxes of who knows what, blocking one of the lanes on this roadway.

If it were not for the constant efforts of the Prince George Regional Correctional Centre’s inmates,   the roadway would look much worse.

The Regional District of Fraser Fort George is looking  to do something about it.

Recognizing that most of the litter is the result of unsecured loads, the Directors of the Board have received a report which outlines a number of options for their consideration. The options include:
  • Increased public education,
  • Revisions to existing bylaws to help enforcement
  • Consistent  application at all landfill and transfer station sites to the addition of a penalty surcharge for uncovered loads entering the landfill site.

Directors have asked staff to come back with a report on implementing the various recommendations.

I really like this option:

‘Consistent application at all landfill and transfer station sites to the addition of a penalty surcharge for uncovered loads entering the landfill site.’

Better yet, give them the ticket then don’t accept the load.

I agree as well, but if they’re going to take a hard line stance, they better post a cop there. People don’t like to be told such things.

That will just give the kinds of people who don’t secure their loads more incentive to dump elsewhere, like out in the bush.

If it were not for the constant efforts of the Prince George Regional Correctional Centre’s inmates, the roadway would look much worse.

So they should be putting these inmates to work. They need to use these inmates to finish hole patching these roads.

More trash in the bush.

Get the RCMP involved. There are already laws for littering. Maybe the Transport Safety Board?

It is the same thing out west to the dump by the firehall. All year there is crap laying all over the highway and in ditches. I have never seen corrections guys out at our end of town, only the people of the city and west side cleaning in the spring. thumbs up to them.

Why is this a regional district problem and not the city’s problem. That landfill is within city limits, just saying as I am a bit confused over who governs trash in this god forsaken city.

It is a sad commentary on the the people who can’t be bothered to secure their load, pick up what has blown off their load, or who simply leave their trash in the bush. Very low characters indeed.
metalman.

Willyj: the landfill is operated by the regional district, and it is their bylaws that dictate tipping fees and other legislation around waste disposal in Prince George and the rest of the district.

All commercial loads are already charged a fee by weight when dumping at the landfill (this includes city garbage trucks). Already in place is a double charge for any loads that come in untarped. We are fortunate in the north as having one of the only waste disposal sites in the province where residential loads (except for controlled waste, or loads >500kg) are free to dispose of. I hope people will begin covering their loads a bit better so we don’t all lose out and begin having to pay for all waste. It’s not hard to tarp down a load.
