Pump Price Increase Near?
Tuesday, August 28, 2012 @ 3:59 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Inching ever closer to the last long weekend of what is, traditionally, summer vacation, there is strong speculation the price at the pumps will be boosted.
This time, any price hike cannot be pinned to just the increased traffic on a long weekend.
The blast at a Venezuelan oil refinery, one of the largest in the world, and the havoc from hurricane Isaac along the Gulf Coast of the U.S. are expected to create supply issues.
Of course, there is also the matter of demand heading into a heavy weekend of travel but experts say that is just one ingredient in a recipe that is bound to produce higher prices.
The price of a litre of regular gas has hovered around the 129.9 mark in Prince George for most of the summer.

Meanwhile Kamloops consistently pays 20 cents a liter less than PG…..
So is the rest of the province subsidizing Kamloops service stations?
Or are the service stations in the rest of the province making a windfall profit?
“Meanwhile Kamloops consistently pays 20 cents a liter less than PG…..”
So does Vancouver Island.
Yes Gus Other stations are making windfall profits.
In truth, running a gas station is a very low margin business, so low in fact I don’t know why anyone would want to bother. That’s probably some of the reason why so many have closed down over the past few years or morphed into convenience stores only operations.
Selling fuel is a lot like selling lottery tickets, the lotto corp gives them a paltry 1% or whatever they pay these days and that’s it. People demand them, so retailers sell them, even though it doesn’t make a lot of money for them. Gas stations make their money on smokes and snacks, where they actually have the ability to set the price, they don’t with fuel; do you think it’s an accident that the price is the same at all stations within hours? Wake up people and follow the money. Who owns the rights to supply fuel to the Prince George area?
I hear CostCo is going to have a gas station soon. Hope this will keep the competition in check.
Funny how thereis always some kind of spill or fire of some sort just a short time before a holiday or some major event .
Having a Costco gas station is not going to make one bit of difference. Notice the Costco prices down South are not the same for ours. It’s what Sine Nomine says follow the money, it’s the refinery in our town, if Costco doesn’t follow suit then they won’t supply them with the gas. We are just plain gouged in P.G. and are not smart enough to organize and just buy gas from one retailer to send a message.
What happened to the supposed gas price increase that someone mentioned a couple of weeks ago? They reported that one gas station had already raised its prices but the price everywhere else stayed the same.
The gas retailers only get about 2 cents per litre for their service. The rest goes to the supplier.
The Costco outlet is about a year away.
“Having a Costco gas station is not going to make one bit of difference.”
I’m not so sure about that. They already sell propane for quite a bit cheaper than the gas stations…
“We are just plain gouged in P.G. and are not smart enough to organize and just buy gas from one retailer to send a message.”
What message would that send? You’re only punishing the local operator who as mentioned, makes his money from covenience store items, not gas.
Kamloops Cosco gas … when I was there shortly after july long weekend was 101…. while the rest of the town was 119 …
I think costco gas will make a differance … as would a Murphys (walmart gas bars)
Some of you folks don’t get it. The supply to everyone in town comes from one supplier in town. It would cost Costco too much of their profit to truck in gas from elsewhere. So, they get their supply here. But only IF they charge what everyone else is charging. Otherwise, no supply.
This Costco gas bar has been talked about for some time, but notice nothing has happened so far. There’s a reason for that. We are being gouged to hell on gas here compared to virtually anywhere else in BC. (greater vancouver being the other region). Dinky little towns up and down both highways have cheaper prices than we do simply because our population size is greater, hence the more money can be made here. Do you really think the gas supplier wants that to change?
Why is Superstore not beating the other stations on prices (and i know about their discount crap). And if Costco had plans to put in a gas bar, why wouldn’t they have done it already?
I’ll believe a Costco gas station when it is up and running.
So where does the Kamloops gas stations get their gas if they don’t have a local refinery like we do? It must be trucked in. Why couldn’t Costco truck gas in to P.G. and sell it for cheaper than the local stations?
Gas is a commodity.
Prices of commodities go up and down.
The price of said commodity varies from city to city , region to region, province to province, state to state etc.
When prices of commodities that are produced in the PG region are high people are doing handstands….ie lumber, pulp, minerals etc.
Here are the average provincial gas prices according to gas buddy today. The differential is likely primarily due to the provincial tax structure more than anything else.
1 Quebec 139.029-0.622
2 Newfoundland 135.4210.108
3 Nova Scotia 135.043-0.077
4 British Columbia 131.1540.395
5 Ontario 128.8040.486
6 New Brunswick 128.7310.054

8 Saskatchewan 124.6280.175
9 Manitoba 121.9240.229
10 Alberta 113.734-0.494
Here are major city prices …

So, at the moment we are paying about as much as most of southern Ontario which is unusual since there is usually more of a difference. Must be the effect of the hurricane alreade and the supply of oil to the gulf states.
BTW, how much do gas pumps cost these days? ;-)
Costco will truck the fuel in from the US refined from oil from Canada and sell it to us cheaper. Wouldn’t that stir things up! :)
COSTCO, BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME!
Better than a longer airstrip anyday!
Why is it that nobody mentions the 40+ cents per litre that goes to government in taxes.
Every single increase in price, increases the revenue to our government. If government was so concerned about the price we poor folks have to pay, why don’t they forgo their share of the increases?
They could give a s___t about you and your cost of fuel. Are they sending it back to help us fill the potholes in our roads?
Who said the government was concerned?
Good question Northern Citizen.
The fact of the matter is we are being suckered by the gas companies. There is no way that we should be paying more than other areas, especially when we have a refinery here, and therefore do not have to pay the same transportation charges as other areas.
We are being conned, pure and simple.
We have at last count.
2 Federal MP’s
2 Provincial MLA’S
8 Councillors
1 Mayor
Not one of these esteemed ladies or gentleman will stand up and go to bat for the citizens in their ridings to see what the hell is going on with the high gas prices.
Keep in mind that this is a real problem, and that there should be some solutions, or explanations, however we have received none so far.
Is anyone surprised????
In my area in the Tri-cities of the lower mainland, the gas has been 137.9 for most of this month. But that includes 13 cents/litre for TransStink. So I guess that makes it 124.9.
I work in Abbotsford, and when I filled up yesterday, it was 121.9. Ya, PG is definitely getting the shaft.
We just got home from a trip to Quesnel…..
Prices varied from 1.299 to 1.249
So much for Canada being an energy superpower of which its consumers pay more than a lot of the so called oil import dependent nation’s citizens do.
Canada has enourmous surplus oil production and yet we have a choke on our refining output. A deliberately designed choke which is the excuse for shortages and higher prices here in western Canada.
Venezuela’s citizens pay a few cents for their gas and I doubt this refinery explosion will raise their prices. That country looks after its own people rather than the greedy oil companies who controls their prices. Why doesn’t Canada do the same?
The permission to exploit our non renewable energy resources, the permission to pipe and tanker this environmental nightmare should come with some payback to this country and this price reduction of this one commodoty would significantly raise the standard of living for most Canadians.
Kamloops Costco on August 28th at 6pm- $123.9
BTW, Asking if gas prices will rise before a long weekend is like asking if water is wet.
