Prince George, B.C.- Once again the  "Run for the Cure" flag is flying over Prince George City Hall, as the countdown to the annual event continues.

September has been officially proclaimed as Mayor Shari Green  has officially  proclaimed September as "“Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure Month” in Prince George. The proclamation was made following the flag raising ceremony this morning at Prince George City Hall.

The flag will fly  over City Hall for the next two weeks,  leading up to the annual run.  Last year more than 500 peole took part in the run in Prince George, raising more than $135 thousand dollars.

The 2012 CIBC Run for the Cure takes place Sunday, September 30. This is a non-competitive 5km and 1km walk or run that starts and finishes at the Prince George Civic Centre.

Local committee Co-Chairs Shari MacLellan and Renee McCloskey say the organizing committee has been hard at work for months planning for an event that will not only raise significant funds for breast cancer research, but be an inspiring and fun event for participants and volunteers. “We look forward to the sea of pink, listening to inspiring stories from survivors, and celebrating those who can’t be with us,” says MacLellan.

Despite great causes like this I still think City Hall should be a-political and have no flag other than the city, provincial, or federal flag flying at city hall.

Yes it kicks off an interesting discussion Eagleone. I mean there are all kinds of flags for all kinds of causes. Health-related causes, gay flags, the flags of all sorts of nationalities, pirate flags, even the marijuana flag.

One of the questions is where does it begin and end? Now instead of placing such a flag at City Hall is could be placed somewhere else for the duration of the event in question. Have MR PG holding it, place it on Connaught Hill, at the Library, many, many options for city-owned property.

I think city hall is an excellent place for this flag. Cancer has effected just about enveryone in some way and is not political or discriminatory. A municipality showing support for its citizens no matter what they believe or agree with is a good thing. Can’t compare this flag to a Gay Rights flag or marijuana flag as it is not subject to moral or political beliefs. (Apples to oranges) IMO. Kind of a non issue having it fly at City Hall.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I agree with Eagleone. All of this flag raising just amounts to feel-good tokenism.

$135,000 raised by “Run for a Cure” last year. How much did the Terry Fox Run raise? How much did the Movember Prostate Cancer awareness fundraiser raise? Jump for a cure! Walk for a cure! Shave for a Cure! Smile for a Cure! Play 4 a Cure! Shoot for a cure! Walk for a cure! Steppin for a Cure! Race for a Cure! Paddle for a Cure! Ride for the Cure! Hope for a cure! Reel in a Cure! Cousins for a Cure! Jazzin for a Cure, Zumba for a Cure. Cure Fur Cancer! Light the Night Walk! Flippin for a cure! Dance for a Cure! Girlfriends for a cure!

So how’s it going? Millions and Billions of dollars raised each year. How much is spent on marketing the fundraiser event? How much actually gets to be used for research.

The cause is the issue. Don’t you think?

Ummm…was it chilly out or was Sheri just excited about holding the flag….LOL.
