New Landfill Sites for Northwest

Tuesday, September 11, 2012 @ 3:56 AM
Terrace, B.C – Two new landfill sites are to be developed for the Northwest of B.C.

The provincial and federal governments have stepped up with a multi-million dollar investment to help build two modern landfill sites. The Forceman Ridge Landfill will be located 30 kilometres south of Terrace and the Hazelton Landfill will be located adjacent to the old site. The Hazelton Landfill will serve two municipalities, eight First Nation communities and a large rural population in the area.

Both will have modern treatment systems to reduce the environmental impact of solid waste disposal. Current landfill sites in the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine will be closed or converted to transfer stations.

The regional district will receive over $4.8 million from Canada’s Gas Tax Fund toward the total cost of $9.7 million for the projects. The rest of the money will be provided by the RD.

"This is welcome news; this funding will allow the Regional District to move forward and improve the efficiency of solid waste management in our region while reducing our environmental impact, including greenhouse gas emissions," said Harry Nyce, Chair, Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine.

The timeline for construction of the new landfills is unclear.
