Terrace, B.C. – Two Terrace area First Nations have released the details that will likely form the foundation of their treaties with the Crown.
Members of the Kitselas and the Kitsumkalum held a ceremony to mark the signing of a Negotiator’s Letter of Understanding to mark the next phase in the treaty process. Both nations also released details of their Draft Agreement in Principle.
Both First Nations stand to receive self government, land, and a cash settlement should they reach an agreement under the BC Treaty Process. The Kitselas are in line for $34.7 million as well as 36, 169 hectares of land in the Terrace area. The Kitsumkalum would receive $44.2 million along with 45, 400 hectares of land.
The Draft provides both nations with the right to govern themselves and their lands independently, have their own constitution, and maintain Aboriginal rights, programs, and services.
The Draft Agreements in Principle will need to be ratified by the First Nations membership before they can proceed to final treaty negotiations.

Good for them so long as it is clear they are still subject to provincial and federal laws where they apply.
We are all Canadians equally and if they want a kind of supra-municipality that requires membership based on historical ethnicity then so be it… but at the end of the day we are all Canadians under Canadian law.
And take responsibility for the financial well-being of their people from this point on?
Eagleone and servant,
That “equality for all” and “financial well-being” you 2 speak of, is and will always will be the argument used by the ignorant folks in this country…unfortunately, what has happened in the Terrace area will be on-going, at a cost to everyone, because certain protocol was not followed within the Kitsumkalum and Kitselas communities…

I sure am glad I have the privilege to pay taxes so that they can get these handouts! So now that they have all this land to themselves why do they need 44 million dollars? Building bows and arrows and living off the land can’t cost that much can it? Sure can’t wait to see the chiefs big new house and 2013 f350 parked out front and this is signed.
