Encana Reaches Compensation Deal for Sour Gas Leak

Friday, September 14, 2012 @ 3:57 AM
Dawson Creek, B.C.- Encana Corporation will contribute $250,000 towards community health and safety projects in northeast B.C. as a result of the company’s participation in a Community Environmental Justice Forum held in Dawson Creek.

The forum was the result of the sour gas leak near Pouce Coupe nearly three years ago.
The leak was the result of internal erosion in the pipe.   Encan has accepted full responsibility for the leak.

The forum brought together all the parties impacted by the gas leak .  They identified the initiatives Encana will support as compensation.
The $250 thousand will be used   to:
·        upgrade facilities and equipment at the Pouce Coupe Fire department,
·        pay for 1/3 of the cost of a rural interface fire trcuk as well as emergency evacuation preparedness at the Tate Creek Community Centre in Tomslake and
·        wetlands environmental enhancement projects overseen by Ducks Unlimited Canada within the South Peace region

Encana has implemented a number of mitigation measures including recommendations from the BC Oil and Gas Commission to help prevent this type of incident from happening again. Those measures  include hazard assessments on each of its 1,920 wells in B.C., a review of emergency response and communication systems, and an examination of the emergency shut down valve locations.

too little, too late

Even though the fine will never be enough to compensate for the leak, but $250,000 fine is no more than a days profit to these guys.

A days profit? Try a half a second!

I didn’t see a single mention of inspecting the pipes and/or correcting the original problem-corrosion in the pipes. Dragonmaster is right,$250,000 is hardly a fine at all for them.

“I didn’t see a single mention of inspecting the pipes and/or correcting the original problem-corrosion in the pipes.”

That must mean it didn’t happen then.
