Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Spruce Kings bounced back from an overtime loss to start the weekend and scored a 4-2 victory Saturday night over the defending National Junior A champion Penticton Vees at the Coliseum.
The Spruce Kings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes. Liam Board scored on the power play at 14:02 and that was followed by a Chad Staley marker at 18:58. There was no scoring in the second. In the third period Brad McClure made it a 2-1 game, notching the Vees’ first goal at 10:48. But Bradley Ryan made it a 2-goal lead again, scoring on the power play at 14:11. Again the Vees pulled to within one when Wade Murphy scored for Penticton at 15:52. The Vees pressed and took the play to Prince George, only to have Tyson Witala ice the game for the Kings with a shorthanded, empty net goal at 18:49.
The Spruce Kings took 5 minors and a misconduct in the game while Penticton was assessed 4 minors and a double minor. The Vees outshot Prince George 34-25, but Kirk Thompson stood tall to record the victory in the Kings’ net.
With that victory the Spruce Kings move into first place in the Mainland Division with 3 wins and an overtime loss, good for seven points. The Vees remain in first place in the Interior Division.
The Kings’ next action is next Saturday night when they host the Merritt Centennials.
