Prince George, B.C. – The UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team is finding out what it’s like to be the new kid on the block.

The Timberwolves, both women’s and men’s sport teams, received their accreditation to move up to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport level this year. But, as in any other athletic endeavor, it takes time to build a club that can be competitive game in and game out.

The women’s soccer team hosted its first ever CIS games at the North Cariboo Soccer League Fields this weekend and were handed a couple of lessons. They took a 10-0 spanking from UVic Saturday and then fell 7-0 to the University of the Fraser Valley on Sunday.

UFV scored four times in the first half, the first two of those goals coming from the boot of Carly Neeson. Their third goal, a penalty shot from the spot, was scored by Donna Pinning. Surayna Samra closed out the scoring in the opening 45 minutes. UFV got second half goals from Danika Snook, Shelby Beck who hit the top right corner from well out, and Tristan Corneil.

Fraser Valley outshot UNBC 28-16. Now, given the fact the opposition potted 17 goals over the weekend, you might think the T’wolves goaltending was suspect. However, just the opposite was true, as Keeper Jordan Hall made several spectacular saves time and again.

The loss is the third of the season for the women, who also have one tie.

The men dropped a pair on the weekend, 1-0 to Saskatchewan and 4-zip to Alberta to move their record to 0 and 4. The men host TWU for a pair next Saturday and Sunday, both 2:15pm starts. The women host Saskatchewan on Saturday and Regina on Sunday, with both games kicking off at noon.
