Cats Stun SIlvertips in Shootout.
The Prince George Cougars are heading home with four of a possible four points from their opening weekend series with Everett. After a 6-0 victory Saturday, the Cougars followed it up with a dramatic 7-6 come-from-behind shootout victory Sunday. The Cougars scored three unanswered goals in the third period to erase a 6-3 deficit before sealing the game in the seventh round of the shootout.
Prince George trailed 3-2 after 20 minutes. Everett struck first when Kohl Bauml opened the scoring at 2:02 on the powerplay when he banged home a rebound from a Landon Oslanski point shot. Daulton Siwak tied the game just over two minutes later with a powerplay marker of his own. Dallas Ehrhardt and Colin Jacobs assisted on Siwak’s first of the season.
Landon Oslanski extended Everett’s lead to 2-1 on a shorthanded two-on-one when he converted off a pass from Cody Fowlie. But Daulton Siwak notched another powerplay marker 93 seconds later to tie the game at two. Dallas Ehrhardt and Troy Bourke drew the assists. Josh Winquist scored the final goal of the first period at 13:07 from the high slot.
Early in the second period, Everett converted on another powerplay opportunity when Ryan Murray’s shot from the right point found it’s way past Brett Zarowny to give Everett a 4-2.
Three minutes later, Dan Gibb got the Cougars back within one when he fired a shot past Cole Holowenko for his first of 2012-2013. Moments later Daulton Siwak hit the goal post from in close, and Everett was able to maintain their one goal lead.
Penalty trouble continued for the Cougars though when Jari Erricson was ejected from the game for a checking to the head penalty. Dan Gibb then took a checking from behind penalty, which gave Everett a full two minute five-on-three advantage.
Josh Winquist and Landon Oslanski scored 35 seconds apart on powerplays to give Everett a 6-3 lead through 40 minutes.
Early in the third the Cougars killed off another Everett powerplay. The penalty kill was highlighted by two clutch shot blocks from a stickless Jarrett Fontaine. Once the penalty expired, the Cougars started to find some life.
Alex Forsberg moved the Cougars to within two when he raced down the right wing and beat Cole Holowenko with a wrist shot. Then with less than four minutes to go, Marc McNulty scored his first ever WHL goal from in close on a back-hand to move the Cougars within one.
25 seconds later, the Cougars completed the comeback when Caleb Belter was able to stuff a puck underneath Cole Holowenko from the right side of the goal. Belter’s second goal in as many nights made it a 6-6 tie with overtime looming.
Prince George outshot Everett 5-1 in overtime, but they weren’t able to beat Cole Holowenko. Jake Mykitiuk had a great chance for the Cougars while Cody Fowlie just missed a chance for Everett in the final seconds.
A shootout would be needed, and more dramatics would await the visiting Cougars.
Josh Winquist and Daulton Siwak missed their respective shots in the first round before Manraj Hayer and Colin Jacobs each scored. Ryan Murray then put Everett up 2-1, but with the game on the line, Alex Forsberg beat Cole Holowenko to force a fourth shootout round.
Kohl Bauml and Troy Bourke both fell short on their opportunities before Tyler Sandhu and Caleb Belter both found twine in the fifth round.
Brett Zarowny then denied Cody Fowlie, but Jake Mykitiuk was unable to beat Cole Holowenko, and a seventh shootout round was required.
Landon Oslanski missed his opportunity, which set the stage for second-year Cougars forward Jordan Tkatch. Tkatch made no mistake on his opportunity, and the Cougars completed the dramatic comeback.
Not since December 10th, 2011 in Spokane have the Cougars been able to erase a three-goal deficit to win a game. An incredible result for a young Cougars team who refused to quit on the road. They head home with a share of first place in the BC Division with Victoria and Kamloops.
Prince George was outshot 39-38, and finished two-for-nine on the powerplay. Everett converted on four of their seven powerplay chances.
The Prince George Cougars improve their record to 2-0-0-0 on the young season, and will look for their third consecutive win when they host the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday, September 28th for their home opener at CN Centre.
