Fireworks to Return to Canada Day Celebrations

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 @ 3:57 AM
Prince George, B.C.- Fireworks will be back on the schedule of events for the July 1st celebrations at Fort George Park.

Before   jumping to the conclusion the City is ignoring the Core Services review and approving the spending of tax dollars, you need to know the cost of the display has been put up by a private donor.

City Hall has confirmed a $10,000 private donation has been made to ensure fireworks are part of the 2013 Canada Day celebrations.

City staff will be working with the Multicultural Heritage Society over the coming months to plan the fireworks display.

I guess we have to band together without city support to ever get anything good.

And hopefully, Starlight FX will be hired to produce and present the show.
The spectacular show they did for the PGX back in August is a good example of their capabilities.

Good to see a “big” city of PG will have fireworks on Canada day, considering tiny villages are able to have fireworks aswell. PG with no fireworks on Canada day was a GREAT embarrasment!!!

Yes, its funny how all these people who get into politics seem to think they have to always reinforce the idea that politicians always spend money frivolously. For once it would be nice to see city leaders who would show the independant, frugal, self sustaining values that built this country.

I’m the last person to defend politicians, but a teleconference for such a large number of people would be a waste of time.

As far as fireworks go, well, the money has to come from somewhere. “The City” picking up the tab is the same thing as saying “The Taxpayers”. Many people don’t understand that. Glad to see a private donor stepped up.

There has not been a display since 2005, when the longtime sponsor finally said, no more.

Dispite many fundraising efforts, $ 10,000
for shells is a big expense and some people believe that kind of money could be better spend elsewhere.

I am just happy to see, that the great effort by our Mayor has resulted in securing a sponsor for 2013.

Thanks Mayor Green, well done

PGLadybug:
The story says a private donor stepped forward. So tell us about “the great effort by our mayor”.

Glad to hear this!
Thank you private donor.

there is a bit more to the story, than the press release indicates. Be happy, say Thank you

Ooooh, a made in PG mystery. Okay, I’ll go with either Col. Mustard in the ballroom or someone that needs the OCP changed.

Kudos to the private donor, here’s hoping for favourable weather.

Bitching and belly aching are the norm most days. But, when it’s time to celebrate, we need to celebrate. Fireworks entertain many people and it brings a community together.

Too bad our city leaders leave this up to a private donor or donors. They should set the example and then ask for partners. My goodness, $10,000 is not a lot of money and considering the thousands who benefit, the cost per person is very low.

And, I agree with “thisisme”, Starlight FX did an amazing job at the most recent show and I would also support this choice. We did get to see what a $10,000 show looks like. It was pretty spectacular.

“when it’s time to celebrate, we need to celebrate. Fireworks entertain many people and it brings a community together.” Agreed Servant. The Show paid for by the PGX organizing board thru their hard work and fundraising and provided by Starlight FX was amazing. It did cost almost three times this much raised so for..but what a great start and hopefully will attract a few more dollars. Still a very low cost amount for a Canada Day celebration for an entire City this size. Thank you for the generousity of this local donour. Can’t put a price on a little community spirit, in good times and tough!
