IIO on Second Case
Prince George, B.C.- Just two and a half weeks since the Independent Investigations Office was officially "opened", the team has its second investigation. This time, it is in Penticton.
On Sept. 21, RCMP officers in Penticton responded to a 911 call concerning an adult female in emotional distress. While engaged with police, the female jumped from a residential balcony and sustained serious injuries. She is currently hospitalized in the Lower
Mainland.
The incident was reported to the IIO by RCMP on Sept. 25, 2012. There has been no reason given as to why it took four days for the incident to be reported to the IIO.
Today, a team of five IIO investigators was deployed to the Penticton area. They will be meeting with the esignated RCMP liaison officer and conduct preliminary investigative activities.
Additional IIO investigators including the Manager, Affected Persons, will conduct any follow up required in the Lower Mainland.
The first case being handled by the IIO happened here in Prince George, where Greg Matters was shot to death following an interaction with Police at a property in Pineview on September 10th, just hours after the IIO was declared operational.

Wow, a case of damned if you do… damned if you don’t.
So they didn’t stop her from jumping and there’s an investigation, but if they had used a tazer to stop her from jumping there likely would have been an investigation too.
I wonder why anyone would want to be a police officer these days?
cmdrojoe, I agree with your statement about why anyone would want to be a police officer these days. I worry that all the negative publicity, which the media loves, will deter people from entering ino this profession. We will always need police officers and have to take the good with the bad (like all other professions).
Negative publicity, gee and they have not brought this upon thenselves. Hey what about the cop on 7 years administrative leave with pay then gets fired. After 7 years, amazing.
There is a definate need for an Independant Investigative Officer in the RCMP if they are going to get any respect from the general public. I for one will wait and see if the IIO has earned my respect. There are accusations of sexual intimidation and abuse coming from within the ranks of the force. The reason for an independant investigator is obvious here. there are complaints of police brutality and serious wrong doing comming from the general public. These are the people the RCMP are here to protect and the citizenery is asked to show respect for the RCMP. Obviously one can’t respect an organization who is doing wrong to the Innocent.
In my opinion I think the IIO will do right by us and the police forces. As far as the BCCLA are concerned it’s my own opinion that it’s made up of people with law degrees that can’t make their own way in the world. I mean, how can I agree with them when they are supposed to be working for folks in our province and then they throw support behind some woman out in Quebec who wants to wear a Hijab covering? I think they stick their noses in to stuff that is no concern whatsoever.
Have we heard anything about thier first case??? When will we hear something.??
Seems to me that with the time involved to investigate one case, it wont be long before they have a huge number of cases under investigation, and will be unable to function.
We have a dilema.
