New Giscome Classrooms Need New Site
Prince George, B.C.- Yesterday, the Provincial Government announced it will be developing modular classrooms to replace the portables that are on the old Giscome School site. ( see previous story) What isn’t known is where the new modular classrooms will be established.
“We are working with the Regional District of Fraser Fort George to find a suitable site closer to the highest population in that area” says School District 57 Superintendent Brian Pepper. The old school site has been plagued with water table issues and is simply not suitable for the new classrooms. If the new site is to be closer to the larger population area in that region, that would most likely be closer to, if not in, Willow River.
“This is a unique opportunity where the School District, the Regional District and the residents have had, and will have an opportunity to have something that is really valued and a top notch facility for the region “ says Pepper. He says this announcement speaks to the sustainability of rural education “We are certainly pleased with the announcement.”
Pepper says it is too early to say if the new modular site will result in any savings or additional costs for School District 57 as the details have yet to be discussed. He expects the picture will become much clearer over the next 3 to four months as a location and site preparation details are finalized.
The former Giscome Elementary was closed at the end of the school year in 2009 following an engineering report on the facility which showed the building had numerous safety issues including fungal growth, rot and septic issues. Area residents worked with the Regional District and the School District to have two portables placed on site as a stop gap measure to ensure elementary students did not have to endure long travel time to and from the nearest school in Prince George. The old Giscome School was demolished last month.
The new modular classrooms are expected to be in place and ready to accept students September 2013.

New Giscome School, located in Willow River. The irony of it all. I would venture to say 50 plus years ago, Giscome Superior Elementry School was built and Willow River Elementry school disappeared.
None of these area’s Ie; Willow River, Gisome, Sinclair Mills, Longworth, Penny, have very many people or students. In addition some of the places are pretty run down.
Other than a few farms there is not much going on out there. Upper Fraser is a ghost town.
At what point do you suggest **home schooling**
I think Willow River has the best opportunity for growth so would be a goos stimulus for a school there to attract people to the community. A fairly easy commute to PG and a new water system to boot.
i’ve heard of families being bullied out of that area taking their children to safer Prince George because of the biker mentality of the big fella out there. this involves 13 students that used to utilize giscome elementary, including foster children. you can build a school but if his little mafia bullies them out, you won’t have any students to go to it.
Western – that is the funniest thing I’ve read in a long time!! Scary big fellow in Willow River!! LMAO. :-)
Why slag bikers you guys?
There are a lot more working people riding motorcycles than there are organized criminals.
Why not call them what they are?
This guy in Willow, is he a big fat hairy slob who happens to own a motorcycle?
Call him a big fat hairy slob, but don’t insult his bike or his dog.
metalman.
