Prince George, B.C. – The all accessible playground at Duchess Park is now officially open.
The playground is designed so that all children can play in the same space, regardless of mobility or developmental challenges.
The equipment has ramps wide enough for wheel chair access, and special swings and seating on other apparatus.
The park area has been outfitted with a special turf, the same kind as is used at the Northern Sport Centre, but with a different base, so that wheel chairs can roll over the area with ease.
The overall cost of the park is in the $300 thousand dollar range, which includes the equipment and turf ( $239,000) and the landscaping.

Representatives from Fortis were on hand this morning to present the Mayor with a cheque for $25,000 for the development of the park.

The development of this portion of Duchess Park is one piece of the full plan for the area which was the former home of Duchess Park Secondary School. The old school was demolished and replaced with a new facility which fronts on to Winnipeg Street.
The park plan also includes a fenced dog park, and mini bike park which are already complete or near completion, and future development of a possible amphi-theatre, year round field and tennis courts.

This has been a long time coming and is wonderful to see. It’s too bad that none of the many volunteers who actually made this happen were mentioned in the story but I guess its more important the mayor get her picture in the “paper”.
Anyway, kudos to the many people who worked for years on this project! You all deserve a big bouquet!
Thank you to everyone who had a hand in making this magnificent park a reality. It is absolutely beautiful. The playground equipment is fabulous, and as the article mentions, made for children of all ages, stages and abilities. There were many families out at the park this afternoon enjoying the beautiful day and the new facility.
The number of families enjoying the neighbourhood park tells me this is something PG needs more of.
Are they going to maintain this new park?
