Helmet Spares Rider from Serious Injury

Quesnel, B.C. – A 49 year old cyclist suffered minor injuries Sunday after being struck by a sport utility vehicle.
Just before 3pm on Sunday, October 7th, 2012, Quesnel RCMP were called to the Johnston Bridge Loop after receiving a report of a collision between an sport utility vehicle and a cyclist.
The investigation determined the 49 year old cyclist was struck from behind by a sport utility vehicle after the vehicle failed to yield after a stop. The cyclist was transported to GR Baker Hospital where she was treated for head injuries, monitored overnight and later released.
“It was very fortunate that the cyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. There is NO doubt that the helmet provided protection which prevented more serious or potentially life threatening injuries,” says Cst. Krista VROLYK, Media Relations Officer for the Quesnel RCMP.
RCMP remind cyclists that they are required by law to wear a CSA approved helmet. Failure to wear a helmet while cycling could result in a $29 fine.

and what is the fine for not yielding and hitting a biker from behind no less? thank god this lady was wearing one, cant count on the drivers to pay attention now can we.
And I suppose it was very unfortunate that the SUV driver did not know how to drive without hitting someone.
RCMP remind cyclists …..
I find that bizzare.
It should say tha RCMP remind drivers that a red sign with the word STOP on it means come to a full stop.
Before moving ahead make sure that you have a clear path to do so without hitting anyone or anything.
Very rare to see a cyclist stop for a stop sign
What utter BS. The official blowhard from the RCMP wouldn’t step foot out of her cruiser to ticket a helmetless cyclist, unless she was being propositioned by her superior at the same time.
I try not to ride on streets anymore… to many distracted drivers (not that the driver in this story was distracted)..!
Seems they have the ability to determine the extent of damage with a helmet versus damage without a helmet, without having a similiar accident without a helmet. How do they do that?????
My understanding is that damage to the brian, concussion, etc, is caused by the amount of force to the head from the fall, which causes the brain to slam against the inside of the skull. Some people state that the force would be the same with or without a helmet, thus the same amount of damage would occur.
Other types of damage such as cuts, scrapes, bruising etc; would of course be different.
In any event its nice to know that a policeman in Quesnel, can determine the extent of damage that would occur to an individual in an accident without a helmet, just by eyeballing the individual, and the accident scene. These kinds of powers should be used for the common good.
Seems as though ^ someone ^ fell on their head without a helmet.
“Seems they have the ability to determine the extent of damage with a helmet versus damage without a helmet, without having a similiar accident without a helmet. How do they do that?????” Answer: By looking at the damage to the helmet.
“My understanding is that damage to the brian, concussion, etc, is caused by the amount of force to the head from the fall, which causes the brain to slam against the inside of the skull. Some people state that the force would be the same with or without a helmet, thus the same amount of damage would occur.” …… Helmets are designed to absorb the force of the impact,
thus cushioning what would otherwise be a direct hit to the skull.
“In any event its nice to know that a policeman in Quesnel, can determine the extent of damage that would occur to an individual in an accident without a helmet, just by eyeballing the individual,”……..No, again, the helmet.
“These kinds of powers should be used for the common good.”…… Yes Palopu, that is what’s happening.
Some people might be surprised to know that most Countries in the world do not legislate the wearing of helmets when riding a bicycle.
I seriously doubt their is a big difference between the head injuries in Countries without helmets and those with.
I support helmet use for kids, however after that its should be up to the individual. We dont need all this Government legislation. Especially when the fine is some $19.00 and is never inforced.
Why have a law if you are not going to enforce it??? Maybe we should try education.
In all my years, on this Earth and all the people I know who rode bikes all thier lives, I have yet to come across one that had a serious head injury. So, who if falling off their bikes and getting injured, and how does this comapare to
