Smoke Alarms On The Way for Low Income Families

Prince George, B.C.- Today is smoke alarm awareness day, and there is an effort to make smoke alarms available to those who live in less than ideal housing facilities.
93 food banks throughout the province of B.C, will be making available free smoke alarms to interested individuals and families whose housing lacks a working smoke alarm.
The Salvation Army foodbank in Prince George has yet to receive any of the 5,000 smoke alarms which will be available for distribution throughout the Province, but Captain Neil Wilkinson says he is anxiously waiting for details on the program. “We serve many families who live in housing which doesn’t meet fire code regulations, so being able to provide them with a working smoke alarm would be welcome.” Wilkinson says the Salvation Army currently supports 800 families each month in Prince George.
Research by Surrey Fire Services and the University of the Fraser Valley shows almost 70 per cent of homes that caught fire lacked a functioning smoke alarm – and that households in low-income areas, in rural communities and on First Nations reserves face greater risk of fatality from residential fires.

The main reason why they are non functioning is because the batteries get removed to be used elsewhere. They need to distribute smoke detectors that have built in batteries that cannot be removed. Its unfortunate most people do not see the need for a properly working smoke detector and a proper home escape plan until it is to late. Come on people this is yours and you families lives your protecting.
It should be incumbent upon all landlords to ensure that working smoke detectors are located in appropriate locations in every suite or apartment they own.
And all of the detectors in a given building should be hardwired with a/c power, and linked to one another i.e. if one senses smoke, they all sound off.
