Well, heres hoping the snow stays away for a few more weeks, we’re not ready!
Have a good week end.
metalman.

I spent 20 minutes on tuesday during lunch rush hour this week sitting at the lights on 5th and the by-pass counting amount f infractions I saw and the results were surprising. This in no way representative on the traffic as a sustained study has to be conducted all I did was sit at a traffic intersection for 20 mins and record what I saw

35 drivers talking or texting on cell phones
14 drivers running the red light to turn on or of the by-pass
3 drivers running actual red lights
4 drivers that were outright speeding
2 fender benders one involving both drivers on cell phone minor damage in both cases
7 women putting on or re-appling make-up while driving
9 people not wearing seat belts
4 vehicles had children not restrained in vehicle

About half the drivers that were in a turning lane did not use any turn signals at all

Also saw 3 cars with illegal loads in the trunk not properly secured and 1 pickup with an unsecured load

Alo saw numerous drivers do llegal lane changes and several drivers cut in and out of traffic

it is amazing thatthee aren’t more accidents then thereare out there.

Damn I’m a lousy speller today

Scary video I came across… something to think about when pondering the middle east situation today. North Korea announced last week they could now hit as far as roughly PG (4500km)… probably not possible, but not a good development none the less.

Got to love those truck drivers who like to drag race not only down the bypass but from highway 16 and 97 south all the way past the Husky then even still stay neck to neck trying to pass up the hill. Size two hats and size tweleve boots.

Had a couple of inches of snow in Calgary yesterday.

Dearth, that sounds about right. You can see those while walking and driving. It is too bad that people don’t realize the danger they are putting themselves and others in danger with these actions and attitudes.

During my stay in Calgary, I have seen many of these bad habits as well. They also have similar distracting driving laws as BC does, and they still have the same problems here as there is in PG.

“4 vehicles had children not restrained in vehicle”

I am curious how you were positioned to be able to observe that.

As a former resident of PG, I had to deal with a number of comments from outsiders regarding the smell-quality of PG air. “It stinks like rotten eggs” they would say. “Smell of money” was my usual response.

Let me tell you that nothing can compare to the stink-job I experience yesterday as I left my office in Abbotsford. They must have been “spreadin’ sumthin’ fresh” in Chilliwack because that smell was enough to choke a moose.

I lived in PG 37 years and never endured anything as bad as this before.

B.C. – Green and some buddies going to China

China – 2000 miners coming to B.C.

Can we make that a permanent move?!

Regarding driving….

I miss driving in PG (other than the road conditions of course). Down here in the lower mainland, they give out drivers’ licences as a prize in cereal boxes.

I have two hours of commute every day, and you would not believe the jackass maneuvers I’ve witnessed.

If talking on a cell phone and driving is so dangerous and if so many people are doing it, why aren’t there more accidents around town? There doesn’t seem to be significantly more compared to ten years ago.
Dearth saw two fender benders in 20 minutes but that isn’t normal at all intersections.

Gus I was at the island closest to Save on foods and the vehicles with unrestrained kids were all turning on the 97 south from 5th and as such was afforded a perfect view into the vehicles and in one case the kids were actually standing on the rear seat looking out

A lot of people drink and drive too rambelon and get away with it. But all it takes is that one time you dont get away with it and someone is dead. As far as I’m concerned if someone kills someone as a result of texting, talking on cell phone or any other distraction they are no different than someone who gets it their car impaired.

Dearth I am fortunate to be able to drive my daughter to and from school most days and what I see daily is sheer madness! Drivers not watching for kids on the crosswalks, no use of signals, people on phones, speeding through VERY busy school zones and so much more. I had a stroke just over a year ago, which has affected my hands and fine movements, yet I ALWAYS signal, and I do mean always. I do mot expect the other drivers to be psychic! I am not perfect by any means but I do follow the rules of the road to the best of my ability. Rant over LOL

Good for you Spring1! I do the same. I have for years, even when no other vehicles are visible. You may be teaching others to do the same.
Oh, signalling when no other vehicles are visible: I learned this from not seeing other vehicles and pedestrians. Sometimes they are there and you just didn’t notice them. They too can be depending on your signal.

Violence against women, how about violence by women against children. Seems to happen on a regular basis but I have not seen women’s groups addressing this issue.

DALLAS — A Dallas woman who beat her 2-year-old daughter and glued the toddler’s hands to a wall was sentenced Friday to 99 years in prison.

I am constantly amazed how people can justify their poor habits through rationalisation. If it hasn’t happened to me…then it will never happen to me. Take the point of view from some of our fellow posters….they seem to think that because bad things haven’t happened to them personally then that somehow justifies their right or priviledge…or whatever you want to call it…to do the activity anyway….

They seem to think….’Hey I can speed. I speed all the time and get away with it…’

They also think…’Hey…I can text or talk on my cell phone while driving. I do it all the time and nothing bad has happened before…..’

Unfortunately…if people feel the need to continually flaunt the rules at their whim then the powers that be will have to increase enforcement of the laws and penalties. Its that simple. I learned a long time ago that I won’t get speeding tickets….if I don’t speed. A simple idea but it seems to get lost on some people. They get caught for speeding or some other infraction and SOMEHOW it is the cops fault or the speed limits fault or someone elses fault besides themselves….

I drive a lot. I usually average about 4 thousand kilometers a month. I don’t mind that it takes me 10 or 15 minutes longer to travel from PG to Ft St John doing the speed limit. Travelling downtown from the Hart? Might take 5 minutes more by driving the speed limit? I’m less stressed. I save on gas. And I don’t get any tickets. Simple really….

========================================

The smell in PG may not have been as bad but the concoction is much more deadly.Stats show the 33 people die in PG from respitory related illness every year.

I hadnt smaoked for 20 years when we returned to PG and within six months I was flat on my back in the hospital eating predizone by the bucket for relief from respitory problems.

The smell in Abby was from liquid fertilizer (manure) applied to some of the crops that they grow and it is seasonal but not in PG.

See you soon we are looking for a townhome in Abby to enjoy our retirement.
Cheers

Why all this rant on bad drivers? Its quite normal. Check the ICBC website and enjoy the stats. It appears that 52% of driving accidents are caused by the 25 to 42 year age group.

So all the bad drivers are not only in PG but throughout our province. Buckel up and stick to the regulations and you should be OK.
Cheers

Dearth – take pictures of the passing motorist and start a blog!

Took some visitors on a tour of PG — highlite was the new RCMP bldg —- visitors surprised at the structure. Then I see that the RCMP are moving into a $1.2 Billion building in Surrey. That’s right — $1.2 billion!!!!!! Incredible. What did the Port Mann bridge cost? What does a big hotel cost? Is this what they mean when talk is of a “police state”?

What’s up with all the wannabe cops on here???

Sorry for the multiple posts — I was vacuuming the dust off my keyboard and that was the result

Vacuuming sucks ;0)

No strippers ?

I have heard nothing but good about the new CHP. Pretty certain there have always been drug dealers there.

Drug dealers!? Hop pushers!

“The smell in PG may not have been as bad but the concoction is much more deadly”

Have to agree with you there Retired 02. I was recently back in PG for a visit and the entire time I was there I had the “Prince George cold”. Irritation in the throat, plugged up a big and very noticeable tightness in the chest when I would go for a run. Night and day compared to the air quality here in Ottawa.

I should also add that we do get that manure smell around my house a few days every year and it is the liquid fertilizer applied to the farm fields (it’s not coming from Parliament Hill as I had originally suspected!). It is pretty stinky, especially on a hot humid night, but it sure doesn’t cause the issues that the PG fine particulate does.

How do I find out where and when the Enbridge hearings are??? It’s the same as the core review… I couldn’t hear what was being discussed and when I asked them to speak up so people in the back could hear nothing was done. If I were to give a talk and people couldn’t hear I would get speakers and a mike. My take on both the Enbridge hearings and the core review is that the people who are pushing the buttons just want to fuzzify what ever it is that is happening.

“Then I see that the RCMP are moving into a $1.2 Billion building in Surrey. That’s right — $1.2 billion!!!!!! “

That price tag is a total lack of understanding by the media who report out on it. The construction cost is nowhere near that … it is around $200 million for a much larger building, of course. On a per square foot cost it comes in at about 25% less than our. The quality is the same, but the extra for the lobby certainly is not there in Surrey …..

The cost of over a billion is a total cost of building, operating the building (janitor, heat, managing, etc.), maintaining the building and buying it back at the end of the 25 year period for $1 or something in that vicinity. All re-roofing, flooring, painting, etc. will be in as new condition at that time as possible. I believe it includes all insurance, taxes (grants in lieu of etc. as well).

It is a full blown P3 = Design, Build, Maintain, Operate.

When this first hit the media over a year ago, the headlines read that the price escalation was something like 500%…… basically show how stupid the media is …. and then it sticks in people’s minds ……

BTW, the cost of our police station will be similar …… $40 million for the front end part … then add say $200+million over 25 years ……. and then, the same as the division headquarters in the GVRD, we will continue to pay for operation and maintenance.

So, no one has spoken about the increased operation and maintenance cost on a larger facility. The first 5 years will likely be quite reasonable ….. then things will start to go especially if the City operates the building like they do the roads.

Would we like to see the impact on taxes to us over the 25 years for this bilding? … of course!!!!

Do you think that City Hall is pepared to give it to us? Of course not!!!! They may not even know themselves …. that is the sad part of the situation they get us into. And worse still is that the Core Review people, despite of the fact they are bean counters, can’t count beans like that …….

We are in a very sad state … let’s go to China and pretend everything is okay at home ……

That is the link to the fact sheet on Division E Headquarters. I have posted it on several occasion on this site.

I agree with Seamut.

Violence against women, how about violence by women against children. Seems to happen on a regular basis but I have not seen women’s groups addressing this issue.

Yes The Gov’t gives out Grants so these groups can do videos bout the kind of life they had. Never mind as to whether what they say is true or not, then they go post these videos on YouTube and NO ONE wants to take responsibilities for what has been said. What about handicap kids that are psychologically abused by their parents??/ Think the Ministry investigates??? Nawww they see the kid healthy and say all is fine., despite the kid being handicapped and can’t walk or speak. Think they do thorough checks on the parents background?? nawwww they make appointments to come around. WHO stands up for these kids??? Certainly not the establishment.. they wait till something happens to the kid, need physical evidence, they say. I really feel for those kids that have money (Trust) and their parents holds them as hostage because they know the kid can’t stand up for themselves. In this day and age, this happens frequently but no one talks about it. These women’s groups just like bashing the males, forgetting the kids. Long story short, hope one day our society, as a whole, actually look after these kids and care about them as others would want you to be cared for in that fashion.

Our govt permitting foreign workers to come into BC to work our coal mines is nothing more than union busting BS and another stab in the eye to the BC workforce by The Feds and our own prov corporate loving Liberals.

It won’t be long and we will all be earning the same wages as those foreign slaves do in their own countries.

Why are the taxpayers in this province allowing this to happen?

We all need to stand up and put a stop to this BS!

I see the site is undergoing a name change.

So long Opinion250, hello 250News?

about the RCMP building in Surrey — thank you, Gus, that clarifies it.

You that so called green car the city is testing, well maybe not so green after all, read on

Electric cars are worse for the environment
When everything else about being Green turns out to be a pox on the environment, it’s no surprise that electric cars are too.

“The Norwegian University of Science and Technology study found greenhouse gas emissions [of electric cars] rose dramatically if coal was used to produce the electricity.

Electric car factories also emitted more toxic waste than conventional car factories, their report in the Journal of Industrial Ecology said.

http://joannenova.com.au/2012/10/electric-cars-are-worse-for-the-environment/

Oh BC Hydro at times imports a large quantity of coal sourced electricity from the US and Alberta at night.

Back on Oct 5 the Citizen ran an article about another city hall waste of money.

” City models sketch out climate change”

Now city hall did you not know the climate always changes and we do not live in a climate of constant utopia.

It says the high-tech maps built on a foundation of exhaustive scientific research- what a pile of bull droppings.

How much grant money I mean taxpayer money was spent on this research? Ian Picketts, Craig DeLong just what do you mean by climate change, warming or cooling or utopia? Did you folks already have a biased outcome on this research when started? Remember the scientific method? Not much application of that when it comes to climatic research. No where does this piece mention warming or cooling, just climate change. Do you learned men believe there was no climate change before evil men rubbed two sticks together.

No where does this article come right out and say what is meant by climate change or mention the evil C02, plant fertilizer by the way. They implied but did not come right out and say it. Makes me wonder hey Frank if they know the bus has left the station on this C02 thing but still want the grants coming in. They should be getting on the cooling bus coming into the station.

Frank the indicators are lining up to give a cooling period over the next few decades, ask these men about that.

What’s local climate change anyhow? Does that mean only the climate in PG is changing?

Just what is the mean temperature of Prince George and the world supposed to be anyhow?

Another thing how is ethenol in fuel supposed to help the enviroment when more “green” fuel is burned to go the same distance as regular fuel. Also land that should be used for growing food is now being used to grow fuel, does not make sense. Not to mention helping to raise the cost of food.

What do the Norwegians know anyway Seamutt?

They are the architects of open net pen salmon farming and all the problems associated with it around the globe.

Dragon I noticed you call your fellow citizens ‘taxpayer’ lol. Must be a government worker thing.

That said I agree its outrageous the idea of bringing in foreign miners to do the work here in BC for less wage than domestic workers.

The problem with the whole migrant worker program is that the workers are not protected, they work for less and in worse working conditions, and they don’t have the rights to demand any better… in the end it drives down all our wages and is nothing more than a tool by multinational monopoly capitalists to further their own greed. On this we can agree.

I noticed today a Canadian military convoy. Can’t say I’ve ever seen that before in PG. Interesting thing was they all had Canadian license plates on them… was expecting maybe Alaska or something… then thought Canadian? I wonder it must be only the military that has Canadian plates?

Another thing I noticed today was the Real Canadian Superstore has the flags mixed up on the wrong poles. One would think they would know better….

I tought agriculture had tough times, but nothing like running a country, like USA, borrowing 30 cents of every dollar spend, and it doesn,t seem to concern anyone, how much are Greece, Spain and Portugal borrowing for every dollar spend? How can they ever pay this back?

Dragonmaster, HUH. By the way I like farmed salmon. Same with farmed chicken, beef pork, etc.

Dearth: are you a wannabe cop or what? You have way too much time on your hands if you sit at intersections watching for infractions. Did you ever consider looking at yourself in the mirror for hours and see if you can find any faults? Why not find something useful for your life rather than looking for driving misdemeanors. Wake up to the fact that there is probably a thousand traffic offenses in the city every hour and your vigilance will change nothing. Sheesh! Do something positive please. Help little old ladies across the street or something.
