Cupe Leader Questions We’re Broke, Let’s Go To China Thinking

Prince George, B.C. – The president of the union representing inside workers with the City of Prince George wonders what Mayor Shari Green is doing planning a trip to China when the city is in apparent financial dire straits.
A 250 News article Friday on the agenda for Monday night’s council meeting indicates Mayor Green will ask council to endorse sending her, Councillors Dave Wilbur and Lyn Hall, and acting City Manager Kathleen Soltis to Jiangmen, China in late November to continue efforts to establish a twinning relationship with that city, and to attract tourism and investment to Prince George. The mayor anticipates the trip, at the end of November, would cost between $30 and $35-thousand-dollars. $12-thousand would come from left over grant money received from the province with the remainder to come from the $25-thousand sitting in Council’s economic development fund.
The trip would come on the heels of the final Core Services Review Report to the City from KPMG. The review was undertaken to find reductions to the costs of running the city at a time when city infrastructure is severely underfunded.
The President of CUPE Local 1048, Janet Bigelow, in being told of the China trip, says “I am speechless actually. I appreciate that they’re trying to generate activity”, but she notes that former Mayor Dan Rogers made a similar trip to China in 20102. “It would be interesting to see how much money has been spent on these trips over the years and what has come of it. Compare the money spent to what has been generated in the way of economic activity coming into the city.”
Bigelow says she has real problems with such an excursion. “I do have concerns because they’re saying that they need to be fiscally responsible, and they’re saying that we’re broke. Well if we’re broke how can we have money for that. I don’t think we are broke, personally, and I think that they need to be serious about spending time looking at what are good decisions and what aren’t good decisions, good fiscal decisions. And I don’t mean cutting jobs and cutting services. I don’t think that’s very responsible to the citizens of Prince George to flip off to China.”
Bigelow questions some of the decisions of the present council, including giving themselves a hefty raise, sending all but one member of council to the recent UBCM convention in Victoria, and now planning a trip to China, while at the same time claiming poverty. “I don’t know where the accountability is, where the responsibility to the residents lies, when they make decisions like that. Usually if we are having issues with money you cut back in areas you’re able to, that aren’t going to affect anyone. I understand they’re going to want representation at something like UBCM, but I don’t know that you have to send that many people there.” She says “I think you can get the City’s business done with less people” (going) who then report back to council. “I’d be interested to know how much that cost, because hotel rooms and food are not cheap. And I wonder if they blew their budget for conventions.”

I have not voted for Sherry Green in the most recent mayoral race because this kind of thinking is prevelent when a candidate is well funded by big money. When the mayor got elected the spending started and didn’t slow down until we were getting low on cash and couldn’t cut any more programs. We don’t need a CORE REVIEW we do need people who spend less money and know when to say no to the big time spenders.

Is anyone really suprised? These ‘elected’ officials think they can do whatever they like once they gain office. There seems to be no accountability….
The facts are these and finally Janet Bigelow is getting it:
Catering to the union is no longer a priority in this city.
Economic activity is a priority!

Ya ore importantly does Frank Everitt get it?
Frank Everitt is a good man. He runs a private sector union. Completely different from the public sector union’s.
Franks union understands that you need to work in the spirit of cooperation to make the economy strong. He know when companies are not making money, either are the workers.
Cupe and the public sector unions, don’t care about the bottom line. Their job is to be obstructionist and light their hair on fire and just make a scene. They don’t care what it costs.
Janet Bigelow would do well to be reminded that over 1/3 of the core review recommendations came from the City staff. Good for the staff.
How many recommendation came from the union? zero
Spend Spend Spend Tax Tax Tax…..thats what Brian Skaun and the union want.
Heads up folks……Janet Bigelow and CUPE DONT CARE ABOUT YOU!! and why should she, someone has to make the payments on the BMW SUV she is driving. Looks like life is pretty good as a City union rep.
I have asked why my post was removed!
My question to you Marshall Smith, What was your official post (Job) on the Sheri Greens campaign?
Some of these dummies just don’t get it. Unions create jobs for this town but big time spenders like Mayor Sherry doesn’t. The money she takes out of the Prince George kitty goes to far off places and is spent for god knows what. Another big dollar was spent on the new city RCMP station, the prince george hotel is another money pit ect. ect. So I point my finger to where the money is pouring out of the piggy bank not teachers saleries or CUPE saleries. Open your eyes everyone.
“Unions create jobs for this town”
ummmm – huh?
Dont forget to tell the Mayor and Council where Scary Sherri should be going and not to China.
Cheers
Gotta love cry baby, whiney, anti union burger flippers.
Get an education and move up in the world instead of crying everytime theres a union related issue in the news.
gotts love people that think if you are not in a union you are a burger flipper. Whats your credentials Dragon? I guarentee I have more diplomas and cerificates than you so education is not an issue ;)
If the kitchen services staff at the university are CUPE members, doesn’t that make for some unionized burger flippers ?
I talked to the CUPE Boss about her BMW SUV “soxmalone”. And she bought it used for half the price of a new Honda Civic Now thats wise spending!
As far as Unions creating jobs, they dont create jobs, they protect incomes for families, maybe your family, or sr some one you know. I remember quite clerly the struggles workers used to have, poor wages, poor working conditions, no safety standards etc. Unionized workers worked hard to set the standards that respectable employers provide today. Whether their workforce is unionized or not. There is a lot to be greatful for. With respect to the comments about burger flippers, there is no shame in flipping burgers, the shame belongs to the employers who lobby at every opportunity possible to lower the minimum wage.
35 Grand to visit a twin city in China!! Cancel the trip, give the 12 grand back to the feds, and save the additional 25 thousand. Thats a half years wages for the guy who picks up your garbage every week, educates his kids and spend his money locally to support OUR economy. Thats real economic growth.
Agree with much of what you say, raresense.
Sox…perhaps Ms. Bigelow is just better with her money, and either way it is none of your bloody business what she drives. Further, all of the work she does on behalf of her Union is Volunteer. Oh, and the paid Union Reps earn less than the majority of CPG managers or certainly less than the lawyers and other legal counsel, CAO’s and City Managers that they sit across the table from.
Good job Ms. Bigelow, don’t know why you do it, what with the narrow and small minded points of view out there, and I am not a Union member and never have been; however, read up, do your research folks and lastly thank you to people like Ms. Bigelow for fighting the good fight, for the workn’ stiffs out there and trying to keep a trifle of an even playing field out there. Last thing we want is our province/country being another Juarez Mexico, India or China.
PS: Sox, big business and corporations don’t give a sh*t about workers OR small business and fair private enterprise, you may not realize it but we are all on the same side.
