Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Public Library has unveiled its first-ever Literacy Art Calendar featuring thirteen well-known city residents artistically altered in rather unique ways.
The library, in partnership with the Community Arts Council, came up with the idea of producing a sort of “fine art” calendar
for an arts and literacy-based fundraising effort. All proceeds from the sale of the calendars will be split 50-50 between the two bodies.
All of the “living human canvasses” had paint applied to their faces, and in some cases torsos, with literacy-themed renderings by 12 local and area artists. They were then photographed with the photos developed into 7-foot-tall posters, which were on display for Friday night’s private launch at the main library.
The art subjects include Shirley Bond, Colin Kinsley, Darrell Hubbell, Shari Green, Dr. George Iwama, Colleen Sparrow, Stu Ballantyne, Dr. William Osei, Shirley Gratton, Kal Basi, Jennifer Pighan, Mike Benny and Ashley Hinton.
Amongst the artists are Milan Basic, Mandy Paavola, Crystal Desharnais, Cara Roberts, Crystie Tarr, Mo Hamilton, Jennifer Pighan (artist and subject both), Corey Hardeman, Grace Kostamo, Betty Kovacic and Shauna Harper.
The library’s Communications Coordinator, Andrea Palmer, says the posters will be moved to the upper floor of the library and attached to the pillars for all to see. She says if the calendars prove to be popular and they sell enough of them “we would be more than happy to do it again next year.” Palmer says the calendars should arrive from the printer next week.
She says the library will put its 50 percent of the sales toward expanding its physical space and procuring resources. It’s believed the Arts Council will put its portion toward operating expenses.
