Cougars Wrap Up Road Trip With Loss in Medicine Hat.

Sunday, October 14, 2012 @ 9:01 AM

The Prince George Cougars are heading home with two of a possible six points from their three game road trip after losing 7-2 Saturday night to the Medicine Hat Tigers. Jayden Hart scored twice for Medicine Hat while Boston Leier had four assists.

The first period was largely dictated by the Prince George Cougars who controlled play from the start. They had two great scoring chances in the first minute of the game, and were eventually rewarded when Dan Gibb put a shot towards the goal that found it’s way past Marek Langhamer. Jordan Tkatch was credited with his second of the season, and the Cougars had an early lead. At one point the shots on goal were 6-0 favoring the visitors.

Medicine Hat would tie the game at one thanks to a delay of game penalty assessed to the Cougars. Elgin Pearce took the puck from the left-wing boards and placed a low wrist shot past Devon Fordyce for his second of the season.

Hunter Shinkaruk extended Medicine Hat’s lead when he deflected home a Dylan Busenius point shot for his fifth of the season.

The Cougars nearly tied the score on a power play, but Raymond Grewal missed a chance from point blank range.

Late in the period, the Tigers added to their lead off a turnover in front of the Cougars goal. Boston Leier fed Jacob Doty in the slot, who made no mistake for his first of the season.

The shots were 15-10 favoring the Cougars after one, and effort-wise, it was not a bad start. Dean Clark pulled goaltender Devon Fordyce in favor of Brett Zarowny to start the second period.

The Tigers quickly padded their lead at 2:12 of the second period when Jayden Hart beat Brett Zarowny on a low shot. Hart then made it 5-1 when he converted an excellent pass from Boston Leier from behind the net for his second of the night and fifth of the season. Kyle Becker added a power play goal at 12:31 of the second to give the Tigers a 6-1 advantage.

Devon Fordyce came back into the net to start the third for Prince George, and the third period went back and forth until the final minutes, when Daulton Siwak notched his fifth of the season on a five-on-three power play to help make the deficit 6-2.

Chad Butcher scored the game’s final goal at 17:39 to round out the scoring.

The Cougars were one-for-six on the power play while Medicine Hat went two-for-seven. The Tigers held a slight edge in the shots department, outshooting the Cougars 32-30.

The Prince George Cougars record now sits at 5-3-1-0, and they will now head home for a Tuesday night showdown with the Calgary Hitmen, before heading on the road for two more games against Kelowna and Spokane.
