PGDTA Wary of Olive Branch from Premier

Thursday, October 18, 2012 @ 4:05 AM
Prince George, B.C. –  While the Premier is calling on the BCTF and  the Ministry of Education  to get rid of any pre-conceptions  about  working together,  the  Prince George  District Teachers Association is being cautious.
President of the PGDTA, Matt Pearce doesn’t hold out much hope for the proposal put forward by Premier Christy Clark. ( read previous story)  That proposal  called for a new, fresh start with the BCTF and the possibility  of working towards a 10 year contract to ensure stability in the classroom.
"We are very wary of anything that the Premier says" says Pearce.    He  says  there is a  history  with Christy Clark,  “She has had a very rocky relationship with the teachers of the province since she was education minister”.
Pearce also points out  that  this  olive branch is coming at a critical time in Clark’s career  “She is probably in her last six months office and so you have to consider that."
The Education Minister will be involved in consultation with the BCTF,  Trustees,  DPACS, and other stakeholders  for the balance of this month and heading into  early November.

I don’t trust anything the BC Liberal gov’t says, or does. Ever since they sold BC Rail right out from under us, and after they said they weren’t going to sell BCR. So what’s bloody well next?

“We are very wary of anything that the Premier says” says Pearce.”

I’m sure the feeling is mutual, Matt.

Both sides need the strap!!!

As the sky starts to fall, they will sell pieces back to the owner.

If I am not mistaken, it was Christy Clark that was Education Minister that tore up a legally signed contract with the teacher that has resulted in the miss trust and most of the problems in education today.

Good strategy for Christy. If BCTF refuses to work for her – then they’re saying, we want to wait for the next government – because they’ll be nice to us. Which, in some people’s minds would mean, I think I better vote Liberal or else the BCTF will walk away with the store.

Or, they refuse, and she manages to win the election, and has the mandate to put the boots to them because – after all, she reached out to them and they told her to go pound sand.

If they do work with her – and actually get a deal, then suddenly to the left leaning people, she’s done something that no one every done before – got labour peace in education.

IF they do, and there’s no deal, well, what can you expect. Only once since 1994 has their been a negotiated settlement between the government and the BCTF – and that one was with a Liberal government. Even the NDP had to use legislation to get the teachers back to work.

I didn’t think she was that smart.

I think the PGDTA needs a new leader, one more mature than Mr. Pearce. His comments have over time proven his maturity level. I think he might be a good guy, on a social level, but not the guy you want negotiating for you PGDTA.

Remember bornandbred that Matt Pearce has more education than Christy Clark will ever accomplish in her lifetime even though at one time she was the horrific education minister which caused all this problem.

Just because one has ‘education’ doesn’t mean that one has professionalism or maturity… bornandbred’s comment was right on.

If you think that the NDP is going to bend over and let the unions ram new contracts, it’s not going to happen. They have as much of a chance of labour peace with the liberals.

Your always attacking others that stand up against and criticize the Liberals Johnnyboy. Whats with that? Not once do I recall you ever saying anything negative about our govt, yet you always claim you’re no Liberal lover.
Many beg to differ!

Another thing.. you are so very obviously on the opposite side of the fence from the citizens of this province in regards to the comments you post, it stinks!

And what is your relationship with govt that brings you to post what you do bornandbred? You sound like a Liberal hack!

“Your always attacking others that stand up against and criticize the Liberals Johnnyboy.”

…said the guy who then went on to attack myself and bornandbred for our views.

Pot? Kettle?

DM: “Not once do I recall you ever saying anything negative about our govt, yet you always claim you’re no Liberal lover. “

I support the provincial Liberals as a political party, no question about that. I don’t support Christy Clark as leader. I’ve made that point in other threads.

DM: “Another thing.. you are so very obviously on the opposite side of the fence from the citizens of this province in regards to the comments you post, it stinks!”

You speak on behalf of the citizens of this province? I didn’t get that memo.
