RDFFG Calls for Denial of Greyhound Application

Prince George, B.C.- The Regional District of Fraser Fort George is now on board the effort to stop Greyhound from reducing services throughout northern B.C.
The Regional District has submitted a letter to the Passenger Transportation Board, calling on the board to deny Greyhound’s application.
The RDFFG cites concerns a reduction in service would negatively impact those Northern residents who rely on bus service to access appointments, educational programs and workshops as well as tending to personal and financial matters such as banking or meeting with lawyers.
The Regional District also notes Greyhound provides a valuable service to business customers who use it for courier service to communities not served by other commercial couriers.
Greyhound has applied to reduce service on a number of routes saying it is losing millions of dollars because of a decline in passenger loads. It also claims it has to unfairly compete with Northern Health Connections which provides subsidized service for patients travelling to communities for medical appointments.

I did not realize that the RDFFG nor the city can tell private enterpise not to reduce services and they have to operate at a loss.
So basically they are saying maintain the existing service or stop business. I bet they will choose the later.
So I guess Diversified Transportation better ante up and be ready to roll.
So who wrote and signed the letter? Green and other members of council are on the RDFFG. Just wondering if the letter is similar to the one Green wrote on behalf of all of us – the city?
Govt should not be able to tell a private business to stay open unless its also willing to subsidize the service. Taxpayers are speaking with their choices here, they are choosing an already subsidized bussing system (NH). What a tangled web is weaved when there are social systems directly competing with private business. If Greyhound can’t compete, they should either lower their rates to attract more riders, or end the route. Other business will take up the slack, like the courier companies or even Canada Post, which is reasonably rated since it is owned by the Govt.
The northern Health bus is a necessity or bring health providers to PG. Northern? people require a cost sensative transportation system and it should be provided. I am tired of paying extra for the privilege of living in PG.
I think the NH Bus is a necessity because specialists don’t want to live in Prince George. Even if they did move to PG, many people still have to travel to see them, and I’d rather pay $20 one way than put gas in my tank, as it’d save me money. Greyhound wouldn’t be my choice. If I had to choose between Greyhound and driving my own vehicle, I would simply choose the cheapest option. If I’m unable to drive, I would work it out so that it was costing me as little as possible anyway you look at it. That’s the thing! In today’s world money talks. NH Bus is needed, and Greyhound will never be able to compete with their inexpensive rates. Making them continue is useless as they’ll go out of business. I don’t understand how Greyhound can be forced to continue the runs. Maybe just do the route once or twice a week? That’d be more sustainable.
I am still unsure how people think that the NH bus is “competing” with greyhound… They are apples and oranges

Where were all these letters and demands when West Jet stopped many of their PG direct routes? If Greyhound can not make a profit on these routes, then absolutely they should discontinue them.
I guess we all should move to the lower mainland so it’s cheaper to get to doctor’s appointments. The sky train is cheap. We could all live in social housing because we wouldn’t be able to afford a house down there. Although getting to the doctor’s office might require a cab ride to the sky train station because walking would require effort. We could make sure the cab driver stops for smokes and booze along the way.
The RDFFG a while back was gonna anti-up about a million bucks to the Performing Arts Centre gang to help with their agenda until the province and the feds turned the PAC down. The RDFFG probably has too much money and it’s probably burning a hole in their pocket. Why don’t they subsidize the bus company?
