Arcand Named Business Person Of The Year

Saturday, October 20, 2012 @ 11:01 PM

Prince George, BC – The Prince George Chamber of Commerce rolled out the red carpet this evening for the 2012 Business Excellence Awards…

A sold-out crowd of 330 attended this evening’s gala, styled after the Oscars, at the Coast Inn of the North.  In total, 10 local businesses and individuals were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the city over the past year.

The Business Person of the Year Award went to MaryAnne Arcand.  Arcand’s contributions to Prince George and the region are numerous.  In addition to being Executive Director of the Central Interior Logging Association, she is the Board Chair of the Carbon Offset Aggregation Cooperative of BC and sits as a director on numerous boards including the Trucking Safety Council of BC, BC Small Business Roundtable, and BC Forest Safety Council.

Chieftain Auto Parts Ltd. was honoured as the 2012 Business of the Year, while Eoin Foley of Nancy O’s was awarded New Entrepreneur of the Year.

Chamber Executive Director, Jennifer Brandle-McCall, says, "We re-structured the Business Excellence Awards this year, decreasing the number of awards from 15 to 10, which really worked to deepen the pool of nominees in each category."

Rounding out this evening’s winners:

  • Corporate Citizen of the Year – Integris Credit Union
  • Micro Business of the Year – Green Mobile Veterinary Services
  • Service Excellence Award – Splash Media Group Inc.
  • Environmental Leadership Award – The Salvation Army
  • Community Impact Award – Prince George & District Elizabeth Fry Society
  • Outstanding Corporate Culture Award – Costco Wholesale
  • Tourism Impact Award – World Baseball Challenge Society

Chamber President, Bill McGill, says there were a record number of votes received from chamber members for this year’s nominees and this evening’s award ceremony sold out two weeks in advance.  "Engagement is obviously high," he says.  "And the word is out:  Prince George is a great place to do business."

So glad that D. McLaren did not win this award and that Ms. Arcand did. Congrats to Eion Foley of Nancy O’s; what a great restaurant it is.

Does “deepening the pool” mean more had to tread water and some may even have drowned?

Inquiring minds want to know:

1. if there is a “micro business of the year”, why are there not also mini, midi, and maxi categories?

2. what is the basis for a cutoff – number of staff, gross income, net income, or other?

I’m really not following this. I’m not seeing how Ms. Arcand is a “business” person. The CILA is an advocacy group as far as I can tell. Same with the other groups. I don’t really consider those to be businesses?
