Wednesday, October 24, 2012 @ 3:59 AM
Prince George, B.C.- The Prince George RCMP’s Community Policing Section kicks off it’s  Step In, Step Up anti-gang project today with two youth forums and the official launch of a social media page.

About 200 students from Ron Brent, Quinson, Harwin and Nusdeh Yoh Elementary schools will be gathering at the Civic Centre today for an interactive forum designed to give them the skills to recognize the signs of gang recruitment.

Tomorrow, about 60 students from the John McInnis Centre’s Alternat Education Program will take part in a similar event geared for an older audience.

The forums are in addition to a special Facebook page, “Step In, Step Up” which provides a venue for young people to talk about anti-gang related topics. The Facebook page is also where upcoming events will be promoted.

To kick off the Facebook page, there is a video contest open to those aged 13 to 18. Entrats have to create a 60 second public service announcement that   has an anti-gang message. Applications for the contest can be picked up at high schools in Prince George, the YAP office downtown (across from City Hall) or online by clicking here.

The Step In, Step Up project  is a three year, four phase project that received $175,000 in funding from the Provincial Government. The social media launch and youth forums are the first two phases of the project. The next two phases will see a Youth Council developed, and an anti-gang summit held.
