Cougars Fall to Chiefs At Home.
Tuesday night in Prince George, the Cougars dropped a 6-1 decision to the Spokane Chiefs. With the score tied at one after 40 minutes, Spokane scored five unanswered in the third to earn their ninth victory of the season, while handing the Cougars their seventh loss.
Troy Bourke got the Cougars on the board at 12:19 of the first period on the man advantage. Bourke went hard to the net and banged home an Alex Forsberg pass for his third of the season. Colin Jacobs added the second assist, and the Cougars skated to the locker room up 1-0 after 20 minutes. Shots on goal were even at 5-5.
The second period provided more of the same. It was a back-and-forth defensive battle with neither team really yielding much in the way of chances.
Spokane took advantage late in the second though when Todd Fiddler was able to work his way through a couple of defenders and skated around a Mac Engel poke check for his first of two on the night. It was 1-1 through two periods.
Early in the third, the Chiefs took the lead on a deflection goal from Mitch Holmberg. Tyler King deflected the initial shot, which then deflected off of Holmberg’s stick and past Mac Engel for his 11th of the season.
Less than a minute later, Spokane struck again when Collin Valcourt notched his seventh of the season on a power play with Mitch Holmberg and Brenden Kichton grabbing assists.
Tyler King, Dylan Walchuk and Todd Fiddler would add goals in the third to make the final score 6-1 for the visitors.
Prince George outshot Spokane 6-1 and finished the game one-for-four on the power play, while the Chiefs were 1-2 on their opportunities.
The Cougars record now sits at 5-7-1-0 while Spokane improves to 9-3.
These teams will meet again Wednesday night at CN Centre to finish off a streak of three straight meetings between the two clubs.
