Roll Over Closed 16 Near Hazelton

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 @ 5:45 PM
Hazelton, B.C. – The New Hazelton RCMP officers are currently on the scene of a single vehicle crash on Highway #16, approximately 2 kilometres east of Hazelton, B.C.

The collision occurred at approximately 11:30 am, when an eastbound commercial transport truck moved to the right to allow two vehicles to pass.  In doing so, the right side wheels caught the soft shoulder and the vehicle rolled into the eastbound ditch.  No one was injured in this incident.

Highway #16 was closed in the initial stages of this investigation and a short time thereafter, to permit emergency personnel to assess the scene and while fuel was being pumped from the overturned transport to a standby unit.  This closure was for approximately one and half hours. The majority of this  transfer has now taken place. A spill team is on site for preventive measures as the fuel is being transferred to another vehicle.  Only a small amount of fuel leaked from the unit and has been contained.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspectors, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the Fire Department are all on-scene with the police, to ensure the public’s safety and follow established protocols.

The crash scene has now been deemed safe to passing traffic.  The highway is currently open to alternating traffic for the short term, while the emergency personnel await the arrival of a crane.  The highway will close again, to permit the operation of the crane and the extrication of the remaining small amount of fuel.

The RCMP in New Hazelton continue to investigate this incident.  There is no indication of speed or alcohol contributing to this collision. Investigators are confident the vehicle will be removed and the scene cleared this evening.

Anyone with any information, or who may have witnessed this crash, is asked to contact the New Hazelton RCMP Detachment at Tel# (250) 842-5244.

Thats embarrasing.

Closing highways for hours on end is BS. If they did that in the US I’d hate to see the results.

jutrting is in the wrong dimension I think. Sounds like Star Trek or something.

Goes to show what truck drivers have to deal with all the time to try and keep the idiots driving smaller vehicles safe. I hope they catch whoever was doing the passing and charge them.

I also think that people getting their drivers licenses need a lot more education regarding driving amongst trucks. It seems that they don’t have a clue what their driving mistakes or inconsiderate moves can mean to a truck driver.

Goes to show that just because you drive a rig for a living does not make you a professional. This is totally a rookie mistake. Driving 101. I hope these idiot truck drivers learn to drive and stop inconveniencing the general public with highway closures.
