Dont Put Away The Snow Shovel Yet

Monday, October 29, 2012 @ 7:20 PM
Prince George- Don’t put the snow shovel away just yet. Jim Steele at Environment Canada says we have had 17 centimetres of snow since it began Saturday, and you can expect another 15 to 20 centimetres before this storm peters out.
Jim Steele says he was in Calgary on the weekend and he thought he was landing in the arctic,  “It was awfully white there”.
There is some relief on the way Steele says, "By the weekend temperatures will rise to about 7 on Saturday and 7 on Sunday with rain."
The long range look from Environment Canada?  "Its going to be a normal year."

“The long range look from Environment Canada? “Its going to be a normal year.”

Has anyone ever gone back and checked how accurate these general long range forecasts were? My guess is ‘not very’.

Well hopefully the plows are out tonight. Its been snowing for two days straight now and havent seen anything plowed but the parking lots.
Are they just going to wait it out and let the warm weather clear things up?

Glad to see in these ever changing times, that one thing is constant; the snow clearing standards of the City. It seems like they are waiting for the warmer weather and rain on the weekend to “clear the snow”. Oh well, got to pay for that China trip somehow. :)

I was actually thinking of keeping the snow shovel out all winter.

I was out and about today and saw plenty of plowed roads. That being said two days ago I bought a car and traded off my 4X4. I have good winter tires on my car and had no trouble at all on my unplowed street.

I don’t know what anyone else drives but my oh my if I can get around in the car I bought everyone else should be able to as well.

Snowplowing priorities for City streets have been the same for years. Downtown streets and bus routes first etc. I get tired of all the negative comments. Things could be a lot worse, and it wouldn’t hurt to be a little bit more patient!

“it’s going to be a normal year” what a load of crap. Even a broken watch is right twice a day.

Actually I was quite happy to see the plows out today and the roads in the main part of town plowed to the middle. Was nice for a change…….errr wait sorry I forgot I was in vanderhoof this morning.

When that rain comes the streets will be a soupy slippery mess!

It’s weather, it changes, get over it!

“””The long range look from Environment Canada? “Its going to be a normal year.”””

NO SUCH THING. Average maybe. The only normal in the forecast being rong.

The snow removal isn’t an issue with me its the whining that there is no budget left. What the hell did we do back in the 70’s when the snow drifts were 8 feet high? Too many pigs at the trough, maybe they should rethink the china vacation.

doublenickel: I was just wondering how soon they are going to come out with that one again this year?

It has got to be the most lame excuse I have heard and yet they use it every year!

to cougars fan and who da thunk and all the other people out there who insist on bashing the city on snow clearing: “boo hoo hoo, cry a little more, baby!”
We spend way more per capita than most other winter cities, and it is a sever waste of money when one considers all the other things that go unfunded. This city needs to cut back on snow clearing, not spend more.

masseyospika ……..

Just curious but I would like to know what you think the snow clearing money should be spent on? I can’t think of anything off the top of my head myself but then again I do value a cleared road now and then.

Those things that most benefit the disadvantaged in our community, such as support for non-profit groups that deliver needed services to people in need. Another thing that bothers me about this emphasis on snow clearing is that it is so trivial to the real needs in our city. Do we really need to improve vehicle mobility or could we not improve the clearing of sidewalks and pathways so that people can walk and cycle more easily?

No we don’t need vehicle mobility, it will save the city more money with no garbage pickup. Trucks can quit driving through our city to deliver much needed goods from Vancouver. Yes please clear the sidewalks I have friends that will need to walk from the Hart and Beaverly areas to work to save money. My friends from Blackburn could toboggan to work. Maybe you should put that pipe down masseyospika?
