BCCLA and Union of BC Indian Chiefs Call For Special Prosecutor

Terrace, B.C.- The BC Civil Liberties Association and the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs are joining forces to press the B.C. Government to take action on the case of an injured First Nations man in Terrace.
In April, 47 year old Robert Wright was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. He ended up being injured while in police custody , suffering a serious brain injury.
Although the incident was investigated by the New Westminster Police who recommended at least one officer be charged, the regional Crown in New Westminster did not approve the charges so the matter did not proceed to court.
The BC Civil Liberties Association and the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs are calling for the Province to appoint a special prosecutor and if the Province doesn’t, then, at the very least, they want police to release all surveillance footage that shows the interactions between Wright and police, as well as the full investigation report.
“The police are permitted to use force, and in their difficult jobs, often the use of force is unfortunately necessary,” says Lindsay Lyster, President of the BCCLA. “However, in a case where investigators find that there is a basis to recommend criminal charges against a police officer, and the Crown declines to approve those charges, the public should know how and why the decision was made and should have confidence in the process by which the decision was made.”

we need more info, or people assume the cops are just getting away with assulting people, its not really far fetched considering we know what else many of these so-called officers have gotten away with. there are good cops out there but stuff like this makes the public lose confidence not onlly in the RCMP but in the Crown which includes our justice system.
What kind of person was this Bob White, he was obviously found to be drunk otherwise would not have made it to cells.
I must be a very lucky first nations person cause in my criminal past all involvement with RCMP guilty or not I have never suffered physical injury, not even a handcuff rash. And yes in some of the communities I`v haunted I was known to Police, but not as a violent person.
And these cops wonder as to why they do not trust em….I,d give em shit and push em in it..
VS…jus wait…..it will come to you..
Go faster, well said!
Zyblxteu, yer not allowed to call the police for anything.
Vulgar, you must be an easy going kind of guy. But, you said it all with “A little consideration and co-operation goes a long way to a pleasant outcome”.
Good one.
