Union President Says There Are Canadian Miners For Murray River Coal Project

Tuesday, November 6, 2012 @ 4:28 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The President of local 115  of the International Union of Operating Engineers,  Wayne Mills,  says there are plenty of workers who could fill the positions that Chinese miners are being brought to Canada for.
"Never mind Canada" says Mills, “there are plenty of miners in BC who could perform the type of drilling that the company says they need to bring special Chinese miners to Canada for”.
Mills was speaking about the action launched by his Union along with the Construction and Specialized Workers Union arguing that foreign workers should only be allowed to work in Canada if a shortage of that skill exists in Canada.
According to the Operating Engineers, 474 miners are out of work in BC.
Mills says there are miners who are quite capable of doing this type of work that the company is saying can only be done with the Chinese miners.
"It’s easy" he says "for a company to advertise for workers at 60% of the going rate and then argue that there are no Canadian workers to do the job".

Here here Give the jobs to Canadians.

I bet it is cheaper paying the expenses for a chinese miner flying from his homeland, than for a unionized BC miner who, although he won’t fly anyways, will want the cash for an equivalent flight booked at the last second at the highest rate. Not to mention LOA from the second he accepts the job.

Let’s replace the word “miner” with “doctor” or “pilot” or”firefighter”. Do you still think companies or governments, for that matter, should be able to hire the cheapest labour available worldwide so they can save a few bucks? Globalizing the workforce is a race to the bottom. The only winners are large international companies that have access to cheap labour.

Maybe Prince George can ask Ottawa for a Canadian Consulate downtown next to a drop-in centre or a pawnshop so the potential Chinese miners/defectors won’t have too far to go to seek asylum if they so wish.

One thing you have gotta love about the internet is the anonymity. Even if there were no workers in Canada with the skills or ability to do the job, the Temporary Foreign Workers would not be training local people or Canadians to “usher in a period of prosperity”. The important question to ask is this. Why is the HRSDC Canada looking into the case now that it is going to court and not during the application of the TFW permits?

Tim Horton’s in Vanderhoof! You will see workers there from the Philippines. Could this be also a lack of Tim Horton’s owners making 15% of a $3,000,000.00 gross income and want to pay Canadians minimum wage? You can not afford to drive to work on minimum wage.

Wayne we have no longwall miners in BC. Who do you suggest should train our miners on a completely new skill? Everyone in the north east that works with coal is either on again, or off again because the cost structure is so high. This causes families to fail, and businesses.

I was just making an observation. Since when is working in a coal mine the same as a Doctor?

The workforce is globalized if you are willing to travel. I mean are you that unaware? Really? Canadians work in mines on oil rigs, in hospitals, Universities, high tech manufacturing, Entertainment, sports, travel…The list is endless.

So it is quite alright for Canadians to seek employment in other countries where their skill or trade is in demand, instead of training the locals? But not here in BC?

Notice when it is Somalians working in an e-coli ridden meat processing facility doing a crappy job…? Not a word from the union boys about stealing Canadian jobs.

Styxxx, when Canadian Doctors, Oil workers, Sports, Travel, etc go to work in foreign countries, do those Canadians go abroad for 15% less than the locals in thoses countries?

I think not, Canadians go abroad because there is a skill shortage and the wage is reflected. The wage is not artificially reduced compared to the locals by their governments in order to give companies a labour “subsidy”.

This has nothing to do with foriegn labour, it has everything to do with our Federal government introduing policy to attack the Canadian worker for the benefit of corporate profit.

Apparently the miners here are NOT skilled at this type of mining. So your point was….?

Can’t you read Styxxx?

My point was,….This has nothing to do with foriegn labour, it has everything to do with our Federal government introduing policy to attack the Canadian worker for the benefit of corporate profit.

15% less Policy!

What is this 15% number you are kicking around? I would hazard a guess if you include every single travel and LOA and meal allowance, pension, extended medical, dental, life insurance…etc..etc…the unionized miner demands, I would suggest the number is much higher than 15%…Which begs the question; why would ANY company want to pay its employees as if they were skilled at the required task, when they are not?

I mean I don’t really care if 471 unemployed miners in BC can’t find a way to upgrade their skills to what is required in the industry these days. If they were able to perform the tasks, maybe they would have a case before the labour board.

I don’t know…maybe miners in BC have priced themselves out of the market.

Read a newspaper before you post on stories you have no clue about, Styxxx!

Wait a minute, I commented on this topic on this website. Why would I care what pablum you read from that progressive rag? Why don’t I quote Fox news?

Maybe miners don’t posses the skills to warrant excessive union pay won over the years through different more protectionist times.

Not unlike most menial unionized jobs the pay and benefits are usually artificially higher than they should be.

You don’t see anybody complaining about the foreign workforce for all sorts of manufacturing jobs in this country, as we all understand the days of making a career out of screwing lids on toothpaste tubes are over.

Plenty of businesses fail as soon as a union certifies the workforce, as it becomes unprofitable. Most Canadians understand that menial, unskilled or assembly line workers just don’t warrant 30.00 dollar an hour wages.

I guess that settles it then Styxxx, you are an expert in everything!
