Cougars Fall Short in Comeback Bid.

Friday, November 9, 2012 @ 10:25 PM

Friday night in Prince George the Cougars outshot Edmonton 40-29. But Oil Kings netminder Laurent Brossoit made several big-time saves, and the Oil Kings held on for a 4-2 victory in the first of back-to-back games. TJ Foster had three points for Edmonton while Jari Erricson and Brett Roulston responded for Prince George.

Edmonton scored three unanswered goals in the first period starting with an early one at 1:56. After Laurent Brossoit made an excellent save at one end, Henrik Samuelsson received a long pass and beat Brett Zarowny from in close to make it 1-0 Edmonton. TJ Foster then scored shorthanded at 5:03 to make it 2-0 Oil Kings.

Prince George responded with lots of good pressure, but Laurent Brossoit made several key saves to keep the Cougars silenced.

Late in the first, Edmonton extended their lead when Michael St. Croix was able to sneak one past Brett Zarowny for his team leading 12th of the season. His goal came with just two seconds on the clock, and Edmonton had the 3-0 lead after one despite being outshot 14-9.

Prince George swapped goaltenders for the second period, as Mac Engel replaced Brett Zarowny. The Cougars continued to pepper Laurent Brossoit with pucks, and mid-way through the second they were rewarded for their efforts.

Jari Erricson went hard to the net and grabbed a Colin Jacobs rebound and shovelled it past Laurent Brossoit for his fourth of the season, and the Cougars were on the board.

Erricson had a glorious opportunity on his next shift, but Brossoit denied him point-blank, and the Oil Kings took their 3-1 lead to the second intermission even with the Cougars outshooting them 28-20. Some bad news late in the period for the Cougars as captain Brock Hirsche left the game after blocking a shot while shorthanded.

Mid-way through the third period, the Cougars closed the gap to one when Brett Roulston pounced on a Carson Bolduc rebound and beat Brossoit upstairs for his fourth of the season, and the Cougars were back within one with a full 10 minutes remaining.

The Cougars were able to kill off a late penalty, and were given a fifth power play with just over two minutes remaining. Laurent  Brossoit made a couple of late saves to keep it at 3-2, and then Griffin Reinhart sealed the game with an empty-netter from his own zone.

With the loss, the Cougars record now sits at 7-9-1-1 while the Oil Kings improve to 12-5-1-2. The final shot tally had Prince George ahead of Edmonton 40-29. Neither team was able to capitalize on the power play, but Edmonton did have a short-handed marker.

Next up, a rematch on Saturday night from CN Centre.

That was a good game even though they lost! Wish more people would show up though; it’s an inexpensive evening for the family. (If you sneak you own treats in…shhh.)
