Prince George, B.C.- About 40 members of the United Steelworkers Local 1-424 and their supporters rallied outside the Prince George constituency office of Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills training over the lunch hour.
Carrying signs that read “Christy’s Job Plan: Made in China” and “Stand up for B.C. Miners” they were there to send a message to the provincial Liberals that jobs HD Mining has given to temporary foreign workers could be filled by British Columbians first.
The Steelworkers have been very vocal in their opposition of the company bringing in more than 200 Chinese workers to work on the early stages of the Murray River coal mine project. The Steelworkers filed a complaint yesterday with the Minister of Mines in B.C., Rich Coleman, saying the workers hired cannot possibly meet the demands of safety regulations if they are not fluent in English. They also claim temporary foreign workers are exploited through low wages, no benefits and little workplace protection.
Pat Bell was not in his constituency office today as he is tending to urgent family matters.

Can someone tell me if out of province workers flying in and out of Ft. Nelson on a daily basis pay BC taxes related to source of income?
If the company is out of say Alberta the payroll tax is collected by that government if their paychecks originate from that Province.
I would guess that they do not. Same with all of the workers who come from Eastern Canada.
And all the workers from BC working in Alberta & there are lots pay BC taxes

I would not call a worker from Alberta or Eastern Canada a “foreign worker” They continue to contribute to this great Country of ours through Fereral taxes. I am sure that the workers in Ft. Nelson are not being exploited through low wages and no benefits, in fact i would suggest that some of the provinces highest wages and benfits are received in that area.
Well said Farnorth, I guess the above posters just don’t get it.
since when is china a part of alberta OR eastern canada?
