Cats Spank Royals in Victoria
Victoria, B.C. — Nathan Warren stopped 23 shots for his fourth shutout of the season as the Cariboo Cougars scored four third period goals en route to a 7-0 win over the South Island Royals in Victoria.
The Cougars capitalized on all three power play chances, including Brad Morrison’s first period tally which stood up as the game winner, just 5:44 into the opening frame.
Tre Potskin scored his second of the season popping a rebound past South Island starting goalie Jessie Jenks after Riley Pettitt swung a low shot on net from on his back, laying on the ice.
The Cats took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission as the Royals came out storming early in the second dominating play early. But Braiden Epp connected on the power play for his eighth of the season from Liam Blackburn midway through the second to take a 3-0 lead into the final period.
It wasn’t until the 10:05 mark that Kenny Nordstrom stepped up to put in a Blackburn rebound past Jenks which started a flurry of goals for the Cats. Less than two minutes later, Blackburn notched his 13th of the year from Epp and Logan Styler, on the power play to make it 5-0, chasing Jenks from the net as Royals head coach Geoff Grimwood put Markus Daly in for mop-up duty.
Eli Jarvis made it 6-0 Cats sliding the puck in five-hole past Daly on a breakaway after a beautiful feed from Potskin. Riley Pettitt scored his fourth with just over a minute remaining in the third.
Epp and Blackburn both finished the game with three points while Morrison, Potskin, and Nordstrom each had a goal and an assist. The Cats went a perfect 3/3 on the power play, killing off all five penalties, improving their record to 14-3 to remain in second place in the BCMML.
The two teams rematch Sunday morning at 10:00 at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The game will be available live at cariboocougars.ca.
