Prince George, B.C. – The Surrey Eagles came north this weekend tied with the Prince George Spruce Kings for second place in the BCHL’s Mainland Division standings.
The Eagles leave town holding a two-point lead over the Kings after sweeping the local club in overtime Friday and Saturday nights. Coming off a 2-1 victory in double overtime Friday, the Eagles got the winner from Devon Toews at 2:13 of the first overtime period to edge the Spruce Kings 3-2 at the Coliseum Saturday night.
The teams were tied at one after one. Shayne Morrissey opened the scoring for Prince George at the 7:21 mark, only to see Surrey square the score 21 seconds later on a goal by Brady Shaw. The Spruce Kings outshot the Eagles 15-6, but failed to capitalize on three power play chances in that opening frame.
Surrey got the only goal of the second period as Drew Best scored on the power play at the 8:30 mark. The home club took the two minors handed out in that period, which saw the Eagles with a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Morrissey scored his second goal of the game, knocking in a rebound at 2:35 of the third to even the game at 2. Linemates Chad Staley and Jeremiah Luedtke assisted on both Morrissey goals. Each team took one minor in the third period.
And then came Toews’ winner in overtime with the Eagles applying the pressure in the Prince George end of the ice. The Spruce Kings outshot Surrey 30-24 in the contest.
So Surrey picks up four points on the weekend while the Kings collect two points for the O/T losses. Surrey now has 32 points to the Kings’ 30. Chilliwack edged Merritt 3-2 giving the Chiefs 36 points. Chilliwack is the next visitor in town as the Spruce Kings continue their 7-game home stand Thursday and Friday nights.
